The town of Bad Pyrmont, known for its mineral-rich healing springs, can look forward to a new book that takes a fresh look at its rich history. Dr. Dieter Alfter, city archivist and former museum director, not only presented key historical data in his work “Pyrmont Turning Points”, but also highlighted the importance of the cure for the city's economic development. If you look into the past of Bad Pyrmont, it quickly becomes clear that the town in the Hameln-Pyrmont district in Lower Saxony has had the status of a popular health resort since the 17th and 18th centuries. With around 19,911 inhabitants and an area of 61.99 km², the city is picturesquely located on the Emmer River and is surrounded by an attractive landscape. Historical milestones
Alfter's book is dedicated, among other things, to the Wundergelauf of 1556, which contributed significantly to the popularity of the healing springs, as well as the founding of the new town of Pyrmont in 1729 by the Princely House of Waldeck. The year 1863, with the important discovery of a well, and the annexation to Prussia in 1922 also had a lasting impact on the city. Bad Pyrmont has since established itself as a state spa, and the economic focus is clearly on tourism, especially with regard to the spa facilities.
The critical comments that Alfter makes about the recent past are less encouraging. He addresses the Expo 2000 in Hanover and the failed “Aqua Bad Pyrmont” project, which was discussed as part of the efforts to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status “Great Spas of Europe”. The decline in cultural offerings in the city is also regrettable, particularly the decline of the concert hall. Dr. Alfter calls on citizens to participate more actively in decision-making processes so that the historical buildings and attractiveness of Bad Pyrmont are preserved. Several town partnerships, including with Anzio in Italy and Bad Freienwalde in Germany, are important to the city in order to promote cultural exchange. The diversity of religious communities, from Evangelical Lutheran to Catholic to Jewish communities, testifies to the city's openness.
