Neglected playground in Hameln: renovation plans for 2026!

The playground on Platzstrasse in Hameln has been in an unsightly condition for a long time. For years, little visitors have had to make do with broken water fountains, a dilapidated elephant seesaw and a dilapidated sign. But now the city of Hameln has taken up plans to renew this playground. As [Dewezet](https://www.dewezet.de/lokales/hameln-pyrmont/hameln/hameln-verwahrloster-spielplatz-in-der-platzstrasse-soll-umgestaltet- Werden-VPUEEE4X35FPPBCSM2O6IFQEBU.html) reports, the first drafts for the redesign have already been presented and they seem to be generating great interest among residents and families.

It looks like there are two options for redesigning the playground. The first variant focuses on a “cross-generational” space with beds and seating, but fewer play equipment. The second creation aims to offer a wider range of play options - with swings and climbing options - but is smaller in scale. In both variants, the disused fountain system is to be converted into a play fountain. In addition, new tree beds are to be created as a safety measure in the direction of Großehofstrasse, and access in the northern part is to be made barrier-free.

Financing and implementation

A total of 190,000 euros have been applied for for the urgently needed redesign. If approved by the city council, the renovation could be completed by fall 2026 at the latest. The reasons for the delay include, among other things, the existing trees, which entail costly interventions. But the increasing number of children in the area makes upgrading the playground all the more urgent. Many residents and members of daycare centers therefore expressed their opinions about the plans, and the second draft with the broader range of games was met with great approval by the numerous people present.

In addition to this project, the city is also planning further redesigns of playgrounds in Hamelin, particularly in the area aroundschläger's pond and Gertrudenstrasse, which are already on the agenda for next year. The playground redesigns are not only based on current needs, but are also designed as part of comprehensive play planning.

The role of game planning

The play planning takes place in several stages and aims to evaluate open spaces from the perspective of children and young people. Relevant venues and meeting points are identified through forays, and inventory plans are created that document important elements such as fountains and trees. On this basis, measures are defined that include securing, further developing and creating new play, adventure and lounge spaces. This strategy sets high quality standards for community development and is binding once adopted.

It will be exciting to see how the plans for the playground on Platzstrasse continue to develop. What is certain is that Hamelin families can hope for more and, above all, safer playing options.
