Hanover and Wolfsburg in the race for the Women's European Championship 2029!

Hannover and Wolfsburg can have legitimate hopes of being part of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2029. The German Football Association (DFB) announced the eight venues for the tournament at an extraordinary meeting, and both cities are on the list. The final application documents must be submitted to UEFA by August 27, 2025, and the decision on who will host the tournament will be made in December 2025 NDR reported.

The DFB Presidium had limited the selection participation to eleven stadiums, with a commission of experts evaluating the best stadiums and making a final decision based on stadium capacities and strategic considerations. In addition to Hanover and Wolfsburg, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne, Leipzig and Munich were also selected. Cities like Berlin, Gelsenkirchen and Rostock were less lucky, while Rostock was even completely eliminated as a possible venue.

The expectations are high

Ralph-Uwe Schaffert, President of the Lower Saxony Football Association (NFV), was positive about the decision to select the two northern German cities. He sees this not only as a great honor for the region, but also as a huge boost for women's and girls' football in Germany if the country were to be chosen as host. The support for women's football in Germany is remarkable. Over 75% of women surveyed in Germany show a strong interest in football, which underlines the positive development of the sport Statista shows.

The German women's national football team not only has an impressive history, but also has title ambitions going into the upcoming UEFA Women's EURO 2025 in Switzerland, where the team will compete in the preliminary round with Denmark, Poland and Sweden. Such success not only invigorates fans' passion, but could also trigger a wave of interest in the 2029 European Championship.

A look at the competition

Applying for the European Championship is not an easy undertaking, as Germany has competition from Italy, Portugal, Poland and a joint application from Denmark and Sweden. A total of 17 cities expressed interest, but in the end only eight were chosen as venues. The tension is rising and the DFB also hopes that the final round will be a complete success not only in terms of sport but also economically.

For the Hanover and Wolfsburg region, this tournament could not only be a sporting festival, but also raise the visibility of women's football to a whole new level. So let's look into things based on the set deadlines and hope for a great future for women's football in Germany as we watch the final preparations for EURO 2025. So it remains exciting!
