Hildesheim Court: Car thieves use keyless systems to steal millions!

In an exciting trial, four men between the ages of 26 and 38 have been standing before the Hildesheim regional court since July 4, 2025. They are accused of selling high-quality vehicles with a... Keyless Go system, to have stolen and brought them to Poland. The charges include a total of eleven crimes with an estimated value of the stolen vehicles of around 182,000 euros. The verdict is expected in mid-August 2025, while three of the accused remain in custody.

The Keyless Go system is very popular because it allows keyless unlocking and starting of a vehicle as long as the vehicle key is nearby. But this technology also has a dark side: the perpetrators used radio wave extenders to intercept the signals from the vehicle keys, which enabled them to open the cars without much effort. When at least one vehicle was stolen in Berlin, the police were alerted in good time thanks to a location service in Lower Saxony.

Growing concerns about security

Also that one ADAC raises concerns about the security of keyless systems. A study showed that these systems are significantly less secure than conventional radio keys. Only about 10% of the vehicles tested had better protection against theft. The security flaw allows cars to be stolen without the key being physically close - an easy target for thieves who use signal extension devices that are available for just 100 euros.

Even if the perpetrators managed to start the car, the engine will remain running as long as there is enough fuel. This allows them to refuel and continue using the vehicle without leaving a trace. Another problem: Stolen vehicles often lack any signs of being broken into, which can lead to difficulties when settling the damage.

Tips for securing your vehicle

Additional security solutions, such as electronic protection circuits, can also be useful, although they are also vulnerable to tampering. Unfortunately, retrofitting older vehicles with appropriate safety systems is usually expensive and not always practical.
