Women's power for Lüneburg: Experience local politics live!

A breath of fresh air in politics is blowing through Lüneburg: The Lüneburg Climate Decision has launched an interesting event that will take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Under the hash tag “Politics for all”, women, young people and people with a migration background are invited to raise their voices and get actively involved in local politics. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. at Avenir am Fluss, Ilmenaugarten 137c. Here, council members Pia Redenius from the Greens and Janine Burkhardt from the Left will report on their experiences in the Lüneburg council and district council.

Local elections for the city council and district council are coming up in Lower Saxony in 2026. The climate decision recognizes the need to integrate diverse perspectives in local politics. “It is important that politicians come from all walks of life to represent the voice of diversity,” explains Kristin Jordan from Klimatscheid. This event is intended to inspire people who think that local politics is a terrain for others.

Diversity as a key to participation

The authors Sarah Robinson and Leonie Schütte-Silverio provided an exciting project to promote women in local politics in their study 2025, published by EAF Berlin and the BMBFSFJ. It analyzes how structural barriers can be viewed from an intersectional perspective. “Diversity is seen as a democratic necessity, not just symbolic politics,” says the study, which highlights good practices and tips for the participation of women in their diversity.

A central point of the analysis is the consideration of sensitivity to discrimination in language and the creation of safe spaces for everyone. The study also puts important topics such as mentoring offers and access to digital participation in the spotlight. After all, women with caring responsibilities, a migration history or in disadvantaged social situations are often underrepresented.

Further initiatives to promote political participation

But the climate decision is not alone: the CDU and the SPD in Lüneburg have also launched events and training concepts to attract more people to local politics. The goal is clear: the aim is to increase political engagement among the population and to bring together the voices of diversity.

The topic of political participation is particularly relevant because the proportion of women in German political bodies has stagnated for over 20 years. The German Bundestag also shows that the proportion of women remains at one third, which, according to the Bundesstiftung Gleichstellung, requires an urgent solution.

The Lüneburg event on February 3, 2026 will be part of a larger movement aimed at encouraging people to take responsibility and actively participate in political decision-making. Regardless of whether you have previous knowledge or not, anyone interested is welcome to network and ask questions.

There will be further opportunities to find out about the 2026 local elections in the coming period, including an online exchange on January 13th with council members from Alliance 90/The Greens. It's clear: A lot is happening in Lüneburg politics, and the doors are wide open for everyone who wants to get involved.
