Lüneburg: Farewell party for Huw Hamilton – music and donations for the family
A painful loss hits the Lüneburg community with the death of Huw Hamilton, the landlord of the popular Irish pub Old Dubliner. The 57-year-old recently died and his friend Bernd Hülswitt has already taken over the organization of a moving farewell party. This will take place outside the pub on Saturday November 8th. Bernd, who is also the boss of the Stint pub eNTe, is planning a celebration that will honor Huw's life and work, and in which music will not be neglected.
The event starts in the evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. During this festival, which takes place at the same time as the Night of Music in Lüneburg, guests can also look forward to various bands, although their performances have not yet been scheduled. Bernd is optimistic that all permits will be obtained on time, even if he does not yet have all of them in his pocket. In addition to the music, there will be drinks and food at several counters, as well as T-shirts commemorating Huw, the proceeds of which will benefit the family. The organizers are asking for support for Huw's relatives, who are facing particular challenges after his death.
Huw's last wish
The organizing team, led by Bernd, also made the necessary arrangements for an open-air event. This also includes the involvement of the emergency services and the provision of mobile toilets. What is particularly moving is that part of the beverage sales is intended to support Huw's family. Even though there is no entry fee, the organizers rely on donations to provide Huw's surviving relatives with financial support. One thing is certain: it should be a happy celebration of life that Huw will remember fondly.
But that's not all: two days earlier, on Thursday November 6th, Ben Boles will appear at eNTe to also pay his tribute. Under the motto “ALL FOR HUW”, he will waive his fee in order to give the fundraising campaign additional momentum. For many residents, this festival, which focuses on music and community, will be a way to honor Huw's memory and support one another.
While Huw Hamilton is at the center of the action, the public is also thinking about recent events in the media sector. Another Huw, namely Huw Edwards, the former BBC newsreader, has made a very different headline since his conviction for possession of child pornography and the public controversy that followed. Edwards, who was born in Wales, had an impressive career as a news presenter before the allegations and his resignation in 2024 abruptly ended his career. Even though Huw Hamilton and Huw Edwards operated in different spheres, a comparison of their fates shows how different public perception can be.
According to Bernd Hülswitt, the celebration in front of the Old Dubliner will be an opportunity to get together, remember the beautiful moments with Huw and also actively contribute to helping his family through a difficult time. In Lüneburg people stick together and show that there is a good knack for community and support even in difficult times.
