In the charming old town of Lüneburg there will be a historic Christmas market on the first weekend in December, which will enchant you with a journey back in time to the 16th century. Lüneburg's historic Christmas market
The event is organized by the Lüneburg Old Town Working Group (ALA), which has been committed to preserving the unique old town for years. Around 200 participants in historical costumes and up to 35 lovingly decorated stands create a festive atmosphere. Visitors are treated to a range of traditional craft stalls where basket weavers, potters and glass artists demonstrate their skills. And the Christmas market also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, from delicious mooncakes to the popular Renaissance bratwurst to roasted chestnuts - here you get a good deal for both the palate and the soul.
The opening of the market is celebrated with the hoisting of the banner depicting Saint Michael and symbolizing market peace. Monitored by the city servants, the market attracts many visitors. Part of the income from the stands and admission donations goes towards the restoration of historical monuments, which additionally supports the event and preserves the character of the city.
Market hours are Saturday, December 6th from 12pm to 7pm and Sunday, December 7th from 11am to 5pm. If you want to travel from Hamburg, you can be happy that the metronome only takes about 30 minutes to cover the route. There are also around 800 free parking spaces available on the Sülzwiesen, making travel convenient.
