New wind in Lüneburg: Marcus Röske heads the public prosecutor's office!

A new wind has been blowing at the head of the Lüneburg public prosecutor's office since today, August 13, 2025. Marcus Röske has taken over the position of head of the authority, which had been vacant since the unfortunate death of Gerhard Berger on February 24, 2024. Berger, a respected senior public prosecutor, was taken away just weeks before his planned retirement. During his time at the public prosecutor's office, he initiated significant investigations, including those into the Göhrde murders and the Birgit Meier case, which were previously considered unsolved. Berger was known for his humorous nature and his active support for the House of Youth Law, as Lüneburg Aktuell highlights.

Attorney General Katrin Ballnus ceremoniously presented Marcus Röske with his committal order today. Röske, who has been working in the Lower Saxony judiciary since 2003, has earned a solid reputation through his numerous positions in various judicial authorities. Before he took over the Lüneburg public prosecutor's office, he headed, among other things, the Verden public prosecutor's office and was acting head of the Hanover public prosecutor's office.

A good career

Marcus Röske brings with him a broad range of experience that makes him ideal for the new task. The father of three children first joined the Lower Saxony judiciary in 2003 as a probationary judge, where he initially worked at the Achim district court and later at the Verden regional court. He was appointed public prosecutor in 2006 and quickly earned the trust of his superiors, which led to his appointment as senior public prosecutor in 2011. In the meantime, he also worked excellently in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice and took over as department head of the Celle Public Prosecutor's Office in April 2023.

The Lüneburg public prosecutor's office, which is responsible for the entire regional court district, has a total of 183 employees, including 62 public prosecutors and 14 public prosecutors. In 2024, they conducted over 52,000 cases against named suspects. The importance of the public prosecutor's office lies not only in the prosecution of crimes, but also in its function as an independent prosecutor's office that investigates according to the principles of objectivity, as Niedersachsen Statistics makes clear.

A look at the future

The challenge for Röske will be to continue Gerhard Berger's positive impulses and to guide his colleagues in solid directions. He will certainly have the support of Attorney General Ballnus and the entire team in his new role. In the coming years, it will be crucial how the public prosecutor's office responds to the dynamic developments in the area of crime and how it can organize the processes efficiently.

It remains to be seen what new paths Röske will take to further strengthen public trust in the judiciary. The expectations are high - and the new head of the Lüneburg public prosecutor's office is aware of this.
