SVG Lüneburg starts the 2025 volleyball season with a dream squad
SVG Lüneburg, one of the most successful volleyball teams in Germany, is heading into the new season with big dreams. In recent years, the club has established itself as an undisputed figurehead not only in sport, but also in the heart of the region. In the current season, which started on October 21st, the team is competing with the strongest squad in the club's history, which is driving up expectations, as NDR reports.
The team, consisting of 13 players, strengthened again during the summer break. Sho Takahashi, the 30-year-old player from Japan, was the first to arrive in Lüneburg in June. At the end of September, the newly married Jesse Elser, the future captain, landed at Hamburg airport with his cat Buzzz. Such new additions show how high the standard of SVG is and that players from all over the world are attracted by the family environment and ambitious goals, as highlighted on the club's official website SVG Lüneburg.
High expectations and optimistic voices
The expectations are high. Jackson Howe and Joscha Kunstmann, both key players in the team, are optimistic about how the season is going. However, coach Stefan Hübner points out that success should not only be measured by titles. He also relies on attractive volleyball and the continuous development of his players. With regard to the German championship, SVG would be happy about more than just the title.
In the previous season, SVG was able to secure second place in the final and has taken part in the Champions League for the last two years, which has fueled the interest and hype for the sport of volleyball in Lüneburg. Volunteers from the LüneBlock fan club play a key role by supporting the team at home and away games and are also active in preparing the arena.
A wide network and promotion of young talent
SVG Lüneburg is not only a Bundesliga team, but also the largest volleyball club in northern Germany with a wide range of offerings for recreational and young athletes. There is a close playing community under SVG Lüneburg e.V., which not only ensures the training of talent, but also represents a springboard for many volleyball players who want to move up from the Bundesliga to larger clubs.
In the past, players like Mischa Urbatzka and Markus Böckermann, who are also active in the beach volleyball world, were able to benefit from SVG. In 2016 Böckermann took part in the Olympic Games. Julius Thole, another talented player, was part of the Bundesliga promotion team and was also able to prove himself on the international stage by playing in Tokyo in 2021.
SVG Lüneburg enjoys a remarkable reputation, not least because of the diversity and international popularity that the club finds among its players. With this strong foundation and the new perspective on success, it will be exciting to see where the journey will take us this season!
