Future of the Lüneburg Jungheinrich plant in danger: IG Metall calls for talks!

The air is getting thin for the Lüneburg employees of Jungheinrich AG. The signs are currently pointing to negotiations between the union IG Metall and the company, as the future of the plant is uncertain. IG Metall has already initiated extensive exploratory discussions and submitted a comprehensive offer that includes efficiency, better processes and future products.

How NDR reports, Jungheinrich is planning to cut up to 1,000 jobs in Germany. The location in Lüneburg could be particularly affected, which will meet with resistance from employees. There are currently 400 employees working in the Lüneburg factory, which specializes in custom-made products for the logistics industry, and there is great incomprehension about the impending closure.

Necessary conversations and first steps

Lennard Aldag, representative of IG Metall Celle-Lüneburg, emphasizes how important a safe location and therefore also safe jobs are. IG Metall is willing to talk as long as a serious dialogue takes place. “The initiative lies with Jungheinrich,” said Florian Rebstock, union secretary of IG Metall. A date for the first negotiations is in prospect if the company reacts positively to the negotiations.

The workforce sees itself as having a duty to examine possible industrial action. There has already been a meeting with IG Metall, which is intended to pave the way for further discussions. Despite the uncertainties, IG Metall remains optimistic and ready to find solutions. Ultimately, however, the decision as to what happens next lies with Jungheinrich.

Background to the tariff landscape

One aspect that should not be neglected is the trust of employees in union work. The level of unionization in Germany is only around 20%, which further increases the challenges we face today. The coming days will show whether IG Metall will manage to keep the workforce together and find a solution that secures jobs in Lüneburg.
