Mega project in Bad Zwischenahn: 200 million for a new tourism center!

Big things are happening in Bad Zwischenahn: With a symbolic groundbreaking today, the starting signal is given for an impressive mega-tourism project that is intended to transform the former Bundeswehr hospital site into a thriving recreational landscape. A total of 200 million euros will be invested to create a new highlight for the region from the 34 hectare area, which has lain fallow since the Bundeswehr withdrew in 2008. Mayor Henning Dierks describes the project as “historic” and sees it as a great opportunity for Bad Zwischenahn.

The heart of the project is the four-star plus hotel “Residence Inn by Marriott”, which will have 134 rooms and 260 beds. The Marriott Group takes over the business and the Mayer & Dau Group from Rastede acts as an investor. In addition, around 60 two-story holiday homes are planned, which are intended to further increase the tourist offering. The residential development will include 220 to 230 residential units, 70 percent of which have already been sold or reserved. However, the low social quota is criticized because only 19 of the residential units are intended for tenants with a certificate of eligibility, which amounts to less than 10 percent.

Planning status and further details

In order to prepare the site for the construction project, contaminated sites and ordnance must first be removed. The property owners are working hard to ensure that the development can progress as planned. The construction will also largely benefit regional companies in order to strengthen the local economy. The construction projects are designed in such a way that they result in less surface sealing than during the times when the Bundeswehr was in operation.

Project components Details
hotel Residence Inn by Marriott, 134 rooms, 260 beds
Holiday home complex Around 60 two-story houses
Residential development 220 to 230 units, 70% sold or reserved
Social quota 19 units for tenants with a certificate of eligibility

The goal is completion by 2029 at the latest, possibly even a year earlier. Bad Zwischenahn could soon transform into an even more attractive tourist destination. The region is already a magnet for visitors from near and far who enjoy the idyllic landscapes and various leisure activities. In addition to the planned new hotel and holiday homes, the city wants to create an equal offering through cultural treasures and modern leisure activities.

A look into the future

Bad Zwischenahn itself plays a central role in tourism in Lower Saxony and can already offer a variety of leisure activities. Whether fishing, sailing or cycling on the Zwischenahner Meer - there is something for everyone here. The city has achieved a balance between historical heritage and contemporary events, establishing itself as a family destination in recent years. Parks and local recreation areas invite you to linger, while museums preserve and present local history.

With the developments on the former Bundeswehr site, Bad Zwischenahn is following the trend of making the region one of the most attractive holiday destinations in Lower Saxony. Another major project is also being worked on in the neighborhood: a new bridge over Europe's largest marshalling yard, which is also intended to improve the infrastructure. This shows that the region is on the move and that we have a good knack for future-oriented developments.
