Murder in Friedland: 31-year-old arrested after death of 16-year-old!

On August 11, 2025, the city of Friedland was rocked by a shocking tragedy: a 16-year-old lost her life when she was pushed against a moving freight train at the train station. The suspect is a 31-year-old man who is currently being held in prison in Moringen, a specially secured psychiatric hospital. Chief Public Prosecutor Andreas Buick explained that this hospital is secured like a prison and serves to protect the general public. Traces of the suspect's DNA were found on the victim's right shoulder, significantly advancing the investigation. The 31-year-old remains silent about the allegations and has no connection to the victim.

The incident was initially ruled an accident after police were called about the suspect rioting at the train station. In a voluntary alcohol test, the man had a blood alcohol level of 1.35. His behavior remained conspicuous even after his release from custody; he reacted aggressively in an accommodation for refugees. His condition is considered worrying as he has been diagnosed with “paranoid schizophrenia” and is currently being assessed for criminal responsibility.

Psychiatric accommodation and legal aspects

Placement in a psychiatric hospital in accordance with Section 63 of the Criminal Code can be ordered if an unlawful act has been committed that could endanger others. If the perpetrator is not guilty, he is acquitted and sent not to prison but to a psychiatric hospital. In the case of the 31-year-old, this regulation could come into effect, as the assessment of his guilt is still ongoing. However, an application for detention pending deportation was rejected by the Hanover district court because the risk of absconding was not considered sufficient. The man has been subject to deportation since March 2025 after his asylum application was rejected.

His history is also alarming: in November 2024 he was convicted of exhibitionism and served a substitute prison sentence that kept him in prison until July 2025. Lawyers emphasize that court-ordered placements in psychiatric facilities are often overturned as unlawful due to a lack of legal basis. Therefore, the task of the defense becomes more and more crucial to ensure that the law is correctly applied.

Political reactions and social concerns

Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens has commented on the challenges of the Dublin procedure and is calling for a comprehensive review of the entire case. There is also great concern about the spread of false reports and rumors circulating on social media. The police have called for such information to be questioned and to rely on reliable news in order not to unnecessarily alarm public sentiment.

In these turbulent times, the question remains: How can we prevent similar injustice from happening again? Society and its institutions face the challenge of both ensuring safety and providing justice to those suffering from mental illness.
