Oldenburg is planning a third university hospital – the council votes today!

History is being written in Oldenburg! On June 30, 2025, the city council held a decisive vote on the institutional integration of the Oldenburg Clinic with the University of Oldenburg. This is a step towards the creation of a third university hospital in Lower Saxony, a matter that is very important to Mayor Jürgen Krogmann (SPD). He is optimistic and firmly believes that the council will approve the project. How NDR reports, the approval is only the first step on the path that the Oldenburg Clinic wants to take.

But what exactly is coming up? If the council agrees, the clinic plans to submit an application to the state of Lower Saxony for recognition as a third university hospital. This would not only be a major step forward for the city, but also for the entire region. Starting next year, 200 study places for medical students will be offered in Oldenburg, which represents a significant increase compared to the current 120 places. This has been practiced since 2012, when the site began training medical students oldenburg.de.

A historic step for Lower Saxony

The city of Oldenburg has set itself the goal of creating the necessary conditions for the establishment of the new university hospital in a timely manner. In its decision, the council should also adopt a revised framework agreement that regulates the cooperation between the University of Oldenburg, the faculty, the clinic and the partner hospitals. The aim is to build on an original agreement from 2012. N-tv informed that the new statutes of the clinic are also up for vote, which will clearly define the responsibilities and rights to participate in research and teaching.

The Oldenburg Clinic already has a considerable infrastructure with 800 planned beds and nine specialized centers. This lays the foundation for the desired recognition and the associated additional research capacities. In addition, the Ministry of Health plans to carry out 30 construction measures, of which, among other things, 52 million euros will flow to Delmenhorst to speed up the analysis of samples. Part of the budget is even earmarked for research into more tolerable cancer treatments for women. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new clinic building is planned for January 2026, and completion is targeted for 2029.

Looking into the future

The plan to establish Oldenburg as the third university hospital in Lower Saxony could set the course for a medical upgrading of the region. In addition to the Hanover Medical School and the Göttingen University Medical Center, another large location would strengthen training and health care in Lower Saxony. The city is ready to advance the corresponding application to the state of Lower Saxony in order to complete the process this year.

These exciting times for Oldenburg show once again that great things can be achieved with courage and foresight. With this step, the council has the opportunity to significantly change not only the medical landscape of the city, but of the entire region. It will be interesting to see what happens next!
