75-year-old drowns in Oldenburg River – excitement on his hair!

Yesterday evening, July 8, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Oldenburg that claimed the life of a 75-year-old man. The senior fell on the embankment of the Haaren River and went under. Eyewitnesses reported that the man tried to save himself, but he was carried away by the current and ultimately was unable to reach the shore. Onlookers who tried to help were hindered in their work by the emergency services, whereupon they were sent off, as NDR describes.

The alerted fire department divers immediately searched the water and finally found the man. Despite resuscitation measures that were quickly initiated, his life could not be saved. The scene of the incident, the Heiligengeistwall, was closed until around midnight to give the rescue workers and the police the necessary space.

Unclear circumstances surrounding the fall

The exact circumstances that led to the fall are currently unclear. Another witness described that the man had difficulty standing on his feet before the accident. The police and emergency services have started investigating to shed light on the matter. Perhaps there is an answer to the question of what led to this unfortunate incident.

This tragedy unfortunately reminds us of the increasing number of drowning accidents in Germany. According to the DLRG, 411 people died in waters nationwide in 2023, which represents an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. The year 2023 marks the third consecutive year with an increase in drownings, and it is the first time since 2019 that the 400 victim mark has been exceeded. DLRG President Ute Vogt hopes that more awareness can be created about the dangers of water, especially before the warm season that lies ahead.

Given these alarming statistics, it becomes clear how important it is to act responsibly in our waters and to raise awareness among those at particular risk, such as the elderly. The DLRG is planning targeted information for parents to inform them about the risks. It is a joint task to ensure that accidents like yesterday's in Oldenburg do not happen again.
