Fraud in Bad Zwischenahn: Woman falls for shock call!
There was a tragic incident in Bad Zwischenahn that once again impressively shows how perfidious telephone scammers operate. Despite a recent warning from the police, a woman fell victim to a so-called shock call. This happened on July 17, 2025, and the circumstances are frightening: an alleged police officer informed the woman that her daughter had been involved in a serious traffic accident.
The fraudster didn't waste any time and demanded a large sum of money or valuables in order to avert alleged legal consequences. Under pressure of urgency, the woman handed over cash and jewelry to an unknown man who later disappeared on Peterstrasse. According to the witness description, the person who picked up the car was around 1.85 meters tall, slim and wore a white T-shirt, long trousers and a red peaked cap. The Oldenburg Police Inspectorate is asking for information on (04403) 927 115.
Deceptive callers and their scams
Such shock calls are not isolated cases. Scammers often pose as relatives or police officers in order to put emotional pressure on victims. The goal is always the same: to get money or valuables from the people you are talking to. For example, a serious traffic accident is often reported requiring immediate financial assistance to pay for surgery. In other variants, it is even alleged that a relative has committed a crime and bail is requested to avoid imprisonment. The victims often have little time to deal with the situation before they recognize the fraud. This shows how important it is to be vigilant and not fall into the clutches of scammers. On the Polizei-Beratung you can also find helpful tips on how to protect yourself.
The police warn emphatically: If you are unsure, it is advisable to press the number 110 and under no circumstances use the callback button. You should hang up if you feel under pressure and contact relatives using the number you know. Personal information has no place on the phone - this way you avoid unwanted damage.
The total number of victims of such schemes in the region recently is alarming. In Uelzen, too, two women were recently lured into a trap by fraudulent calls. The Police encourages the population to be vigilant and report suspicious incidents. Because only together can we stop such criminals.
It is our responsibility to not only be on guard ourselves, but also to warn our friends and family. After all, such tactics are about targeting the weakest. Let us remain vigilant, solidarity and informed!
