E-scooter accidents in Lower Saxony are increasing rapidly: An alarm signal!

E-scooters have long been a familiar sight on Lower Saxony's streets, but the development of the number of accidents is making us sit up and take notice. In 2024, the number of accidents involving e-scooters in Lower Saxony rose by almost 40 percent compared to the previous year. A total of 1,777 e-scooter accidents were recorded NDR reported. In comparison, there were almost 13,000 bicycle accidents, which makes the proportion of e-scooter accidents in the total number of accidents seem rather small.

Teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24 are particularly affected, according to local police. The majority of cases involve self-inflicted accidents, which often occur without the involvement of other road users. A clear indication that some people have to learn something here.

Accident numbers in cities

A closer look at the individual cities clearly shows where the problems lie. InBraunschweig81 accidents were recorded in 2024, an increase from 66 in 2023. InOldenburgThe balance was also negative with 63 accidents (32 in the previous year), whileGöttingenclimbed from 39 to 76 accidents.Hildesheimhas changed little and remains stable with 49 accidents (46 in the previous year).

City Accidents 2023 Accidents 2024
Braunschweig 66 81
Oldenburg 32 63
Göttingen 39 76
Hildesheim 46 49

What is interesting is that in most cases there were minor to serious injuries, but there were no fatal accidents. This is of course good news, but it could also be due to a lack of safety precautions, as e-scooter drivers do not have to wear a helmet.

Safety precautions and regulations

The police also expect a further increase in e-scooter accidents in 2025. Detailed statistics will be compiled by the police departments at the beginning of 2026. The rules for using e-scooters are clear: young people aged 14 and over are allowed to ride, but some rental companies only offer e-scooters to those aged 18 and over. In addition, these vehicles are prohibited on sidewalks and in pedestrian zones; they must use cycle paths, cycle lanes or cycle streets. Furthermore, only one person is allowed to ride on each e-scooter.

The alcohol limit is identical to that for drivers: in the range from 0.5 to 1.09 per mille it is an administrative offense, from 1.1 per mille it becomes a criminal offense. There is even a 0.0 alcohol limit for new drivers under 21 and new drivers. In addition, liability insurance including an insurance sticker is mandatory, even if wearing a helmet is not mandatory t online summarizes.

In Hildesheim the regulations are strict: e-scooters are only allowed to be parked in certain areas, otherwise you may face additional fees. The police have already introduced check days to increase security and point out the rules. This shows that something is really important here - the safety of our road users is our top priority.

At least in Wiesmoor, e-scooters were used for good: the fire department uses these vehicles for quick operations, for example when searching for people. Here, too, it becomes clear that the mobility of e-scooters definitely has its value in certain situations.
