A courageous intervention by a witness prevented an attempted theft on October 17th in the Blumenthal district of Bremen. A 16-year-old wanted to steal the money from an 82-year-old senior citizen who had just withdrawn money from an ATM. The teenager first spoke to the woman before reaching into her jacket pocket. What a vile plan!
An alert 54-year-old man noticed what was happening and intervened immediately. He separated the perpetrator from the older lady and freed her from this predicament. The youth, very impetuous, suddenly threatened the witness with death before running away. It shows once again: civil courage can save lives, as NDR reports in detail.
The search for the perpetrator
The police responded promptly to the incident and immediately launched a manhunt. Fresh footprints on a nearby playground led the officers to a wooded area. And they actually discovered the 16-year-old there. When he tried to escape again, he was finally temporarily arrested after a short pursuit. A search also uncovered additional stolen goods that could be clearly attributed to the young person, as Bild reports.
It is noteworthy that the suspect had already stolen a total of 4,000 euros using a stolen bank card from an 83-year-old from Meppen. These acts contextually shed light on the increasing youth crime, which is becoming more and more the focus of attention in Germany, especially in urban areas. According to a Statista analysis, there were around 5.84 million crimes in 2024, with the clearance rate being only 58%.
A social problem
The development of crime is not easy to assess. Although the numbers may be falling, the feeling of security and the threat in society are still growing. What is particularly worrying is the increase in young suspects who are influencing the security situation. Current events show that despite declining overall numbers in certain areas, such as cannabis offenses, fear of crime remains.
