Oldenburg is preparing: New mobile dike against the risk of flooding!

A new, flexible mobile dike is being installed in Oldenburg in order to be better prepared for flood situations. The city has received an emergency dike packed in 42 boxes, which will enable the construction of 900 meters of dike area. This project aims to arm the city against future flood events, such as the Christmas flood of 2023/2024. At that time, Oldenburg was dependent on a dike system from Duisburg, Hagen and Rostock, which illustrates how important this new step is. The state has covered the costs for the mobile dike, which makes it even easier to relieve the city's burden, as NDR reports.

The flood area in Oldenburg should not be underestimated. A study has shown that around three percent of the country's area is considered a flood risk area. The Celle district is particularly affected. There is therefore close coordination with the district in Oldenburg to ensure that a similar model for flood protection is available in other areas. The mobile emergency dike will be built along Sandkruger Straße, which will affect residents and VWG bus traffic. Sectional closures are already underway, which will begin on January 1, 2024 and will be implemented in line with the progress of the work, as the Kreizeitung reports.

A flexible security concept

The new mobile dike offers equivalent protection everywhere, even if the terrain heights vary. The construction will take place on the footpath and cycle path on the western side of Sandkruger Straße and is intended so that open areas can be quickly closed with sandbags in the event of damage. This makes the security systems particularly flexible and responsive, which is of great importance in unforeseen flood situations.

The work on the security systems and water barriers should be largely completed by the end of 2024. In the meantime, individual properties may not be accessible by car during construction. However, the emergency services are prepared and inform the residents about how to reach their houses. If you have any further questions about the construction project, the city administration and the responsible authorities are available at any time. This ensures that all citizens are informed about the progress.

With this step, the city of Oldenburg shows that it has a good hand when it comes to protecting its citizens from the forces of nature. A mobile dike that can be deployed quickly is an extremely important measure to proactively address flood-related challenges.
