Burglary at a gas station in Osnabrück: Arrests after alarm alarm!

On June 26, 2025, a gas station on Wersener Strasse was broken into in Osnabrück-Eversburg. At 3:45 a.m., masked perpetrators forced their way into the sales room and stole several cartons of cigarette packs. An accomplice confessed to bribery during the break-in, which alerted a witness to the crime.

The noise of breaking down the front door and the sound of the alarm didn't make the witness hesitate for long. He immediately alerted the police and watched as the two masked men fled towards Kirchstrasse. This quick reaction led to the police launching a local search.

Arrest of the suspects

The officers came across the two men, 38 and 44 years old, also from Osnabrück, on Atterstrasse. Both were carrying bags that contained the suspected stolen goods. They were then temporarily arrested. The Osnabrück district court ordered immediate searches of their apartments.

The searches of the suspects' apartments uncovered additional suspected stolen property and evidence. The investigation is focused on whether the men were also involved in other crimes. These events are part of a worrying trend, as the number of thefts in Germany has recently increased again.

Crime on the rise

As current statistics show, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in Germany in 2022, including around 1.78 million thefts, which corresponds to an increase compared to the previous year. Shoplifting, bicycle theft and break-ins into motor vehicles are particularly common. These developments make it clear that in North Rhine-Westphalia, where Osnabrück is located, over 23,500 residential burglaries were recorded in 2022 - a worrying increase.

The clearance rate for residential burglaries was just 16.1% in 2022, well behind that of robbery crimes, which is around 60%. In view of these figures, the rapid arrest of the suspects in Osnabrück is a ray of hope in the often tense crime situation.

We will stay tuned and report on the progress of the investigation.
