Award ceremony: Osnabrück honors outstanding African initiatives!

On October 29, 2025, an example of the solidarity between Africa and Europe was once again set in the Peace Hall of the historic town hall in Osnabrück. The ceremonial awarding of the Africa Prize by the Ellen and Karl-Heinz Hornhues Foundation Pro Afrika honored outstanding projects that are committed to cultural exchange, education and sustainable development. As the city of Osnabrück Here reports, the event was introduced musically by Joy Wendo & Friends, which created the framework for a special evening.

Mayor Katharina Pötter welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of the projects that make a significant contribution to the culture of peace in Osnabrück. What was particularly impressive was the recognition of a diverse range of initiatives and schools that make enormous efforts to build bridges between different cultures and address social challenges.

Award winners in the spotlight

The first prize went to the vocational schools of the Osnabrück district in Melle. They were recognized for their groundbreaking projects in Uganda and Ghana that promote sustainable menstrual products and enable exchange programs. A strong sign of support for women and girls who often suffer from taboo menstruation that limits many of their educational opportunities.

Second prize went to class 4a from the Freiherr vom Stein School in Oesede. These bright students supported the sustainability goals with a flea market for a house in Malawi and a game. Not only was boredom not tolerated in this busy class, but an important educational opportunity was also created.

The third prize also went to “Together Moving e.V.”, which organizes an annual Africa festival in Osnabrück. This event brings people together and promotes intercultural exchange, which is all the more valuable in times when division is often at the forefront. In addition to these main prizes, five other initiatives were also recognized with recognition prizes that also support social issues in the region.

Commitment to the future

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Hornhues said that the inclusion of youth is a central concern of the Pro Afrika Foundation. “We need to actively involve the next generation in our goals to create a sustainable future,” he said. The initiatives that were honored in Osnabrück that evening impressively show how much potential there is in collaboration between different cultures.

The evening came to a lively end with a communal song from class 4a, which, together with Joy Wendo & Friends, created a wonderful atmosphere. It is moments like these that create community and remind us all that no matter where we come from, we share a common goal: to promote peace and understanding.

The event is a powerful example of how important cultural relationships are, especially at a time when Africa is struggling with challenges such as environmental protection, political instability and economic development. Africa, the second largest continent with over 1.39 billion people and one of the youngest populations in the world, has so much to offer and is strongly influenced by its cultures, which can be seen only too well in the initiative award-winning projects.
