Rapid speed checks: Police caught thousands of speeders!
The police have once again intensified their speed controls in the past few days. As part of a Europe-wide coordinated Roadpol campaign, comprehensive monitoring took place in Germany in the week of August 12, 2025. This not only puts drivers under the microscope, but is also intended to help increase road safety, as NDR reports.
The Göttingen police department counted a total of 2,366 vehicles checked on Wednesday. 782 speeding violations were detected, most of which were minor. A notable case was a 22-year-old from the Holzminden district who was driving in the city at 88 km/h instead of the permitted 50 km/h. The Osnabrück police were also active and found 303 speeding violations, 170 of which were fined. Five drivers also have to expect driving bans.
Speed controls in the region
The controls were not limited to Göttingen and Osnabrück. In Vechta, speed measurements were carried out between Friday evening and Saturday morning, which led to two driving bans. An additional example is a vehicle that was speeding at 148 km/h with a speed limit of 100 km/h on the A33 in Georgsmarienhütte. These increased controls were almost uniform in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.
The police carry out such speed checks particularly in accident-prone areas, such as near schools or retirement homes. According to the State Ministry of the Interior, speed-related accidents are often the main cause of fatal traffic accidents. In 2024, 418 traffic accidents due to improper speed were recorded in southern Saxony-Anhalt, as MDR highlights.
The results of this inspection week are expected to be announced in the middle of the week. Until then, it is clear that the trend towards speeding will continue and that the police will take increased action against these violations. What is particularly striking is that speeding is one of the most common traffic offenses. According to the KBA statistics, 1,865,722 speeding violations were registered among men alone in 2024 - a worrying figure.
Finally, it remains to be hoped that the current measures will have an effect and that people will rethink their driving style. Ensuring road safety benefits us all and makes our roads a bit safer.
