A2 remains closed until Saturday after truck fire near Peine – traffic jam warning!
A very special traffic accident has turned the A2 near Peine in the direction of Hanover into traffic chaos. At midday on Wednesday, July 3, 2025, a truck transporting car parts including batteries and airbags caught fire. Fortunately, the driver was able to park the vehicle on the shoulder in time and was uninjured. This reports sat1regional.
The fire, possibly caused by the high asphalt temperature, resulted in significant damage to the entire vehicle and parts of the road. The adjacent noise barrier was also affected and is now considered at risk of collapse, which is why it needs to be replaced. Since asbestos is built in, the repair is even more complex and takes longer.
Closing until Saturday morning
The A2 will remain closed in the direction of Dortmund between the Peine-Ost and Peine junctions until Saturday morning. How ndr reported, traffic will be redirected at the Peine junction. Drivers should expect significant delays - traffic jams up to the Braunschweig-Hafen junction may lead to waiting times of around two hours.
The police recommend that all road users avoid the area and follow the signs on the A2 and A39. The federal highways B4 and B188 are being considered as alternatives to mitigate the effects of the closed section.
Fire brigade and extinguishing work
The extinguishing work lasted until the early evening and was supported by around 120 firefighters. These not only helped fight the fire, but also temporarily provided drivers waiting in traffic with drinks. Luckily there were no injuries, but the incident once again highlights the potential dangers of transporting dangerous goods on our roads.
Accidents like this are not only an annoying obstacle in the event that is also documented in road safety statistics. How destatis states, such incidents are the basis for measures in legislation and traffic education. Safer infrastructure and better transport policies are essential to avoid such events in the future.
With the start of the summer holidays in Lower Saxony on Thursday, the traffic situation will become even more tense and it remains to be seen how long the repair work will last. We will keep you updated on developments!
