Bryce Dallas Howard: Honest insights into careers and failures
The Hollywood film industry is a tough place, and Bryce Dallas Howard knows these challenges firsthand. In a recent interview with The Independent, the talented actress and director speaks openly about her eventful career. When asked how the transition from acting to directing went, she notes that this path is not always successful. Howard, known for blockbusters like “Jurassic World” and independent productions like Lars Von Trier’s “Manderlay,” reflects on the different nature of these worlds and the role actors play in the whole.
Her comments on the failures that accompany even the best careers are particularly impressive. One example she cites is “Argylle,” a major Apple+ project with a budget of $200 million that has only grossed $96 million so far. The 2006 film “La Jeune fille de l’eau,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan, only grossed $72 million worldwide on a budget of $70 million. Howard explains that her father, Ron Howard, has difficulty dealing with such setbacks, but she doesn't see these failures as too serious, but believes that every setback also holds a lesson.
Hope for more diversity
At a time when the film industry is under more scrutiny than ever, Howard also takes a look at the challenges facing female directors. Despite the huge success of Greta Gerwig's “Barbie,” which grossed almost $1.5 billion worldwide and set a record for female directors, a study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film shows that the proportion of women in directing is significantly stagnating or even declining. Of the 250 top-grossing films in the United States, only 16 percent of the directors are women, meaning that out of 40 films, only 6 were directed by women. That number even drops to 11 percent for the 100 biggest blockbusters of 2025 - a worrying trend.
However, Howard hopes the situation will improve soon. After all, there is always a reason for hope: changes in the film industry often take a certain amount of time, sometimes up to three years. In the meantime, the actress plans to remain active as both an actress and a director to expand her skills while learning from her colleagues.
So the challenges are great, but Bryce Dallas Howard shows that she has the grit and determination not to give up and to continue fighting for diversity and quality.
