Macron pushes for a quick conference to recognize Palestine!
In a tense political time, the postponement of the UN conference on the status of Palestine is a cause for concern. This was originally scheduled to take place in New York next week, but was postponed indefinitely for “logistical and security reasons”. Emmanuel Macron, the French President, reiterated that the conference would be rescheduled “as soon as possible”. In the next few days, a new date will be set in coordination with regional leaders, particularly Saudi Arabia Yahoo reported.
Macron, who was to co-chair the conference with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was clear: The event makes no sense if regional leaders, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, cannot travel due to logistical and security challenges. Despite these setbacks, he remains committed to pushing for recognition of the Palestinian state, even if this faces resistance from Israel.
Urgently wanted: A solution in the Middle East
As he considers how to resolve the Middle East conflict, Macron remains committed to pushing forward a two-state solution. In a recent conversation with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Paris, he reiterated the possibility of recognizing a Palestinian state. France is ready to support recognition at European and UN levels, which is of symbolic importance, as ZDF reported.
The issue is all the more explosive because the problems in the region are not new. The situation has become even more tense since the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, which resulted in more than 36,000 deaths in the Gaza Strip. Therefore, the call for a stable and peaceful solution was reinforced. This solution must consist of concrete steps towards the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state that at the same time recognizes Israel's right to exist.
The path to recognition of Palestine
However, the reality is different: Israel is skeptical about calls to recognize a Palestinian state and warns that such a move could reward terrorism. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasizes that a settlement can only be achieved through direct negotiations without preconditions. EU foreign ministers recall that the establishment of a Palestinian state is the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East. This is supported by over 140 of 193 UN member states that have already recognized Palestine as an independent state, such as the bpb reported.
The situation remains complicated: Hamas itself rejects a two-state solution, while Israel continues to take aggressive steps against perceived military targets in Iran. Amid these overarching tensions, it is clear that regional peace and stability are more at risk than ever.
