Renovation mishaps in the new Guérande aqua center: problems after just days!
On June 10, 2025 that was aquadynamic center of Guérande ceremoniously reopened after a six-month renovation process. At this point it was urgently necessary to lay a new coating in the pool as the previous one had defects. The renovation work, which began in January 2025, was financed by the La Baule/Guérande agglomeration at a cost of 610,000 euros. But the joy of the reopening didn't last long, because the next problem soon came to light in the wellness and relaxation area.
Shortly after the reopening, the...Wellness and relaxation area (balnéo)temporarily closed due to defects. Experts discovered surface defects in the central area of the balneo basin. Particularly critical defects occurred in the curved areas of the massage tables, where bubbles formed in the new covering. In response, on June 13, 2025, the balnéo pool was drained to determine the causes of these anomalies. All actors involved are now required to find solutions as quickly as possible and to analyze the situation comprehensively.
Problems from the past
A look back shows that the problems in the aquatic center of Guérande are not new. The renovation in 2016 already brought difficulties that ultimately led to a ruling by the Nantes Administrative Court. Here, three construction companies were obliged to pay compensation of 445,000 euros for malfaçon-like work. This sum should cover the defects, especially when laying tiles. The responsible community initially even demanded 802,000 euros.
The judgment found that during the renovation there was an irregular distribution of resin layers that did not meet the requirements of the operating conditions. The failure to properly inspect the work was also criticized. The judge ordered that the construction companies concerned, Sombat, Gruet Ingénierie and Qualiconsult, also have to cover the costs of the legal proceedings in the amount of 1,000 euros.
A look at the expenses
The challenges in the aquatic center also shed light on the issue of conservation and modernization expenditure. According to a report by Haufe Maintenance expenditure is not designed to significantly improve a building, but rather serves to maintain and restore it to its proper condition. The current renovation work in the aquatic center primarily involves taking measures that are generally immediately deductible and ensure functionality.
Although there are high costs and the improvement of the condition of new parts of the building, what is crucial is whether the use value of the building is increased. If this is not the case, the financial burden on the municipalities could be relatively low.
The situation in the aquatic center of Guérande remains tense and all those involved hope for a rapid resolution of the problems in order to restore the center's attractiveness. The focus is on the quality of work and future maintenance to avoid such mishaps in the future.
