Schuhhaus Hundt in Peine: Traditional business closes after 10 years!
An institution in the heart of Peine is closing: the Schuhhaus Hundt, the oldest family business in the city, is in clearance sale. Sales officially started on June 26th and will last until the end of the year. Nicole Wiedera, who has run the shoe store since 2015, did not take the decision to close the business lightly. “The economic situation and increasing online trading motivated me to do this,” explains Wiedera, who originally planned to continue the business for a whole decade.
Wiedera took over the traditional family business from her daughter Mandy, who, however, decided against taking over. Now the owner has announced that it is time to take more care of the family. This also has consequences for the team: one permanent employee and several part-time employees are already looking for new positions.
Tradition instead of growth
Schuhhaus Hundt is renowned for its wide selection of branded shoes, including well-known names such as Ecco, Tamaris and Birkenstock. It is often precisely these high-quality products and customer-oriented advice that make the store a popular place to go. The positive feedback from customers also speaks for the company's good reputation. “The ability to order out-of-stock items is particularly appreciated,” said one satisfied customer.
The spatial location at Winkel 39 in Peine makes the shoe store stand out even further. Despite the challenges, many customers positively perceived the possibility of contactless handover during the Corona period.
Challenges for family businesses
The closure of the Hundt shoe store reflects a larger problem that affects many family businesses. A study by Deloitte on medium-sized businesses shows that the pandemic poses significant challenges for many traditional businesses. According to the study, 69% of companies accelerated their digital transformation, while 28% wanted government support to offset pandemic-related losses. Increased competition and market consequences of the pandemic are considered major risks for the industry.
The high demands of the modern corporate world also affect Schuhhaus Hundt. While there is theoretically still a chance of finding a successor for the business, the future will remain uncertain unless suitable solutions to the retail challenges are found.
For everyone who is looking for fashionable and comfortable shoes in the region, Schuhhaus Hundt has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of quality shoes again until the end of the year - before the doors close for good.
