Swimming season 2025: How to protect yourself from germs in the water!

The 2025 bathing season is in full swing in Lower Saxony. The first outdoor pool, the Friesenbad in Weener, opened on April 15th and has been inviting swimming enthusiasts ever since. But even if the water temperatures are inviting, bathers should pay attention to hygiene and safety. Experts warn of a variety of germs that can be lurking in the water. Here is an overview of how you can best protect yourself from possible health risks.

Hygiene in swimming pools plays a central role in protecting the health of bathers. Regional Today reports that experts from the Wolfenbüttel district are informing viewers about germ contamination. Particularly critical areas are the shower area and the entrance to the pool. Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and various parasites and viruses can be transmitted through water, surfaces or even the drinking water installation.

Dangers in the water

But how do these germs get into the water? In many cases, contamination will occur due to human feces, which may be present in the water despite supposed hygiene. These germs can lead to unpleasant illnesses such as diarrhea, vomiting or even infections. Women are particularly at risk from E. coli, which can lead to symptoms such as bladder infections. Bavarian Radio emphasizes that women with diabetes, pregnant women and older women in particular should pay careful attention to hygiene.

In order to minimize the risk of illness, it is advisable to observe some hygiene measures. This not only includes showering before and after bathing, but also not showing any open wounds while bathing and drying thoroughly - especially between the toes, to prevent athlete's foot and other skin problems. In the wild, however, it is advisable to only use bathing lakes in monitored EU bathing waters whose water quality can be viewed in the Lower Saxony Bathing Water Atlas.

Complaints and allergies

Swimming is not always risk-free. Chlorine allergies, although rare, can irritate the skin and respiratory tract, especially in people with dry skin or asthmatics. It is therefore particularly recommended to visit outdoor pools or well-ventilated indoor pools to protect the mucous membranes. The signs of bathing dermatitis, which can be triggered by contact with parasite larvae, should also not be underestimated. These may cause itchy rashes and may require medical attention if they persist.

To ensure good water quality, swimming pools and bathing pools are continuously processed and disinfected. Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that the legislation stipulates that the water must be safe for health and that it is regularly monitored by the health department.

How to make the most of your swimming season: Enjoy the warm days in the water, but always remember hygiene. With a little caution and the right precautions, nothing stands in the way of a refreshing day of swimming!
