Serious rear-end collision on the A39: emergency services in constant use!
On October 26, 2025, a serious rear-end collision caused turmoil on the A39 motorway between Baddeckenstedt and the Salzgitter motorway triangle. A fateful incident occurred around 4:35 p.m. when a 30-year-old driver from Bad Gandersheim had technical problems with his Mercedes E-Class and was no longer able to accelerate. A 20-year-old Audi driver from Wetzlar noticed the critical situation too late and collided with the stationary vehicle. Both cars remained in the left lane, which further aggravated the situation on the busy highway. According to Bild, both the driver of the Mercedes and its three passengers suffered minor injuries, who were treated on site by rescue workers.
The rescue workers, including two ambulances from the Bockenem rescue station and volunteers from the Holle volunteer fire department, were quickly on site to help the injured. Both vehicles were badly damaged and ultimately had to be towed away. During the rescue, the leakage of operating materials was an additional risk factor that increased the risk of another accident.
Traffic delays and additional accidents
The consequences of the accident were not without impact on traffic. Due to the rescue effort, the vehicles were redirected from the BAB 39 to the BAB 7 in the direction of Hanover, which led to significant traffic delays. Many drivers ignored the detour instructions, which meant that emergency vehicles were sometimes hindered. The Bad Salzdetfurth police pointed out the importance of taking such instructions seriously in order to ensure that the rescue measures are carried out safely and smoothly.
The salvage company was also called upon because two further accidents occurred during this work, which fortunately only caused material damage. The Hildesheim motorway police were on duty to record the accident and helped coordinate the measures.
Accident statistics and road safety
Such accidents are certainly not uncommon on the A39 motorway, also known as the Heideautobahn. Not only cars, but also trucks, buses and motorcycles are often affected. According to Tag24 there is a significant gap between Lüneburg and Wolfsburg that should be closed in the next ten years. Given unresolved conflicts and protests from residents against the expansion, it remains to be seen how this will affect road safety.
The Statistics on traffic accidents provides important data to better understand the safety situation on German roads. It helps the authorities to develop targeted measures in traffic education and traffic policy and possibly also to make structural improvements.
Overall, this incident is another reminder of how important it is to consistently follow traffic regulations, especially in situations that could be dangerous for everyone involved. Stay safe on the roads and take traffic instructions seriously the next time you drive!
