Terror on the train: man threatens passengers and attacks police officers!
An incident occurred on the regional train in Salzgitter on Friday evening that caused great unrest among passengers. A 39-year-old man, who was under the influence of drugs, directly threatened other passengers and said he would shoot them in the head. The man was accompanied by a woman of the same age who was also involved in the scene. These dramatic events took place on a crowded train and forced the police to act quickly. According to the police, the situation was reported from the train and the officers encountered the threatening people at a railway underpass in the Bad district, as NDR reports.
As soon as the police spoke to the man and his companion, physical attacks occurred. The woman suddenly attacked the officers and was then restrained. The 39-year-old then also gave free rein to his aggression and attacked the police officers during the check. Both people were then arrested. The man was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for safety reasons, while the police initiated criminal proceedings against both people, in particular for resisting law enforcement officers. A female officer slightly injured her hand during the attacks, but was able to continue to carry out her duties, as MZ adds.
A look at police violence
Such attacks on police officers are alarming and raise important questions about the safety and security of our law enforcement officers. The discussion about violence against police officers in Germany has become more important in recent years. A study by the Federal Agency for Civic Education shows that a total of 38,109 acts of violence against police officers were registered in 2018, with male suspects predominating. It is interesting that 50.7% of the police officers surveyed stated that they had experienced physical violence on duty, a situation that is particularly evident in everyday operations and not only at major events (bpb).
The legal situation in Germany recognizes a state monopoly on the use of force, which allows police officers to use force in certain situations. This repeatedly raises questions about proportionality and the use of force. Given the growing number of acts of resistance against police officers, it is important to take a closer look at both perspectives - that of the police and that of citizens with regard to police violence - and to discuss necessary reforms.
