Chimney fire exposes cannabis plantation and weapons depot in Mackensen!
In Mackensen, a small village in the Northeim district, a chimney fire brought the police and fire department to the scene on Sunday, December 2nd, 2025. While quickly extinguishing the fire, emergency services discovered an illegal cannabis plantation in the home of a 66-year-old man. He apparently not only had an eye on the plants, but also on two long guns wrapped in foil, which came to light during the search. The man confessed to growing cannabis and stated that he had inherited the weapons, which now has to be checked under weapons law. No one was injured, the building itself remained undamaged, as NDR reports.
When firefighters and a chimney sweep checked a cleaning cap, officials not only discovered 23 cannabis plants, but also all of the equipment needed to grow them. This led to an investigation against the homeowner. It is unclear whether further illegal content was found in the house, as a search did not reveal any other suspicious objects like that HNA reports.
The background to the cannabis problem
The discussion about cannabis is making waves in Germany, especially since the new Cannabis Consumption Act came into force on April 1, 2024. This law decriminalized the consumption and possession of small amounts of cannabis in order to counteract the black market on the one hand and to pursue a more liberal approach to drug policy on the other. This development is no coincidence, as the market for medical cannabis has grown slowly but steadily since then. According to a recent study by Statista It is estimated that recreational legalization could create a billion-dollar market in the coming years.
The tensions surrounding cannabis consumption are clearly noticeable, as an estimated 4.5 million Germans have already had experience with the herb. The 18 to 25 year old age group is particularly popular; almost every second person in this group has already consumed. The drug affinity study by the Federal Institute for Public Health also shows a slight increase in the consumption behavior of young adults, while consumption is declining among younger users.
Mackensen shows once again how complex the topic of cannabis is. Whether this was an offense due to ignorance or a deliberate violation of the law will probably become clear in the course of the investigation. One thing is certain: the cannabis plantation is just another chapter in the ongoing debate surrounding the legalization and handling of hemp.
