Pure sunshine: Lower Saxony experiences hot 35 degrees before thunderstorms!
We have a hot summer day ahead of us today in Lower Saxony and Bremen. The temperatures in the Lüneburg Heath climb to a crisp 35 degrees, whereas in other parts of Lower Saxony the 30 degree mark is already exceeded early in the afternoon. Especially on the coast and on the East Frisian Islands it remains pleasantly cool at 27 to 29 degrees, which makes for a wonderful sunny day that attracts many people outside. In southwest Germany it could even reach 37 degrees, making the heat even more unbearable than it already is. Jumping into the nearest swimming lake becomes twice as tempting.
But caution is advised, because a change in the weather is expected in the evening, which could quickly spoil our party mood. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of a sharp increase in the chance of thunderstorms, which could be accompanied by heavy rain, squalls and hail. The temperatures are expected to fall again in the coming days; on Monday we only expect between 19 and 25 degrees in Lower Saxony and Bremen.
Severe weather warnings and risk of thunderstorms
The situation will remain tense on Saturday and Sunday. Forecasts indicate that temperatures will generally rise over the course of the weekend; in southwestern Lower Saxony, up to 34 degrees will even be possible locally. Here, too, it's time to keep your eyes open: The DWD is drawing attention to the danger of humid heat and subsequent storms. The focus is particularly on the central and eastern parts of the country, where there is a risk of violent thunderstorms and heavy rain.
How does the DWD look to the future? A research project is investigating possible extreme weather conditions in Germany. There is a possibility that temperatures could rise by 2°C to 4°C by the end of the century. This makes the issue of climate change and its effects on civil protection particularly relevant. The researchers want to find out how often and how intense we have to expect heavy precipitation, dry periods or heat waves. These findings are absolutely important not only for science, but also for people's everyday lives.
It is therefore important to find out about current weather warnings and consider any possible measures. Whether via weather apps or news – at this time it is important to keep your finger on the pulse of nature and be well prepared.
