Parking lot at Uelzen Hundertwasser train station: Is the turning point coming soon?
The parking situation at the Hundertwasser train station in Uelzen continues to cause discussions. Residents and travelers have been pushing for the creation of new parking spaces for some time. In an online survey in which 181 citizens took part, 143 of them supported the construction of a new parking lot. This reflects the high demand, which the Uelzener Nachrichten also confirms: According to them, the administrative committee has already recommended a ground-level parking lot with 280 spaces, while the costs for this measure are estimated at around 2.7 million euros. Additional funds for a photovoltaic system and a noise and privacy wall are also taken into account. This shows the city's confidence that funding of up to 1.7 million euros could flow to support the project. az-online.de also reports that construction on the parking lot should not begin until spring 2026 at the earliest.
A three-story parking garage with 400 parking spaces was originally planned, but this plan was scrapped due to rising construction costs. The estimated cost of the parking garage had increased to 12.7 million euros - a sum that the city cannot afford. The war in Ukraine also had a major impact on financial conditions, so the decision to simplify parking appears to be quite pragmatic.
Contrasting opinions within the council
There are different opinions on the project within the Uelzen council. UWG councilor Ralf Munstermann questions whether the parking spaces are still needed. He refers to the replacement area that has already been created on Albrecht-Thaer-Straße. In contrast, Dieter Warnecke from Bad Bodenteich emphasizes that there is still not enough parking space for travelers at the train station. Warnecke expresses his concern about the lengthy planning phase and describes it as a “tragedy”.
Financial conditions and further developments
In addition to the construction costs, there are economic uncertainties caused by the current market situation and the boom in the construction industry. uelzen-tv.com points out that the city presents a comprehensive cost calculation for the park, but this has to be revised again and again in order to meet the economic challenges.
The city of Uelzen is currently at a crossroads. While the citizens express clear needs, those responsible have to worry about the financial possibilities and the structural implementation. It remains to be seen how the Uelzen administration will manage to do justice to this area of tension. After all, expectations of the train station are high and travelers want an uncomplicated journey - this must also apply to the parking situation.
