Varel declares war on rats: poison campaign for a clean city!
In the town of Varel, in the Friesland district, the rat problem is now being systematically addressed. The city administration has hired professional pest controllers to launch a comprehensive offensive against the pests. From now on, highly effective rat poison will be placed in several places in the city center, such as NDR reports.
This poison has unprecedented effectiveness, so the rats do not get up after the first consumption. To ensure that other animals and children do not come into contact with the poison, the bait boxes are carefully placed. In addition, additional bait will be placed at different locations in Varel and in the sewers. This is done in close cooperation with the water association OOWV, which is responsible for combating rats in the sewer system.
Call to citizens
City leaders are encouraging citizens to take action. “Everyone can help by not disposing of food leftovers in compost heaps and making sure not to put too much bird food in the garden,” said Heiko Eilers, head of the public order office. In addition, awareness posters on proper waste disposal are intended to help citizens keep the rat population in check. This is now the second control operation within a year.
The number of calls about rat infestations is increasing daily, and many citizens are reporting rats on their properties. Everyone has the obligation to report an infestation to the public order office in order to discuss measures together. “Without the support of citizens, we cannot solve the problem alone,” emphasizes Eilers. The combat offensive is expected to be successful within a year.
Extended legal framework
The rat control approach must also be seen in a larger context. Since the amendment to the Hazardous Substances Ordinance in 2021, new requirements for expertise apply to the use of biocidal products. On this Ahrens Pest Control explains that only knowledgeable users may use anticoagulants for rodent control and that municipalities must decide whether control is carried out internally or externally.
Municipal employees who apply rat control agents must be knowledgeable and the obligation to report the application of rodent control products also applies to their own properties. The need to comply with these legal requirements is considered crucial in order to successfully combat rats, which are dangerous to health.
The city of Varel is pursuing clear goals with this broad strategy: together with the citizens, the rat population should be sustainably reduced. Anyone who notices a rat infestation on their property can report this to the public order office on the telephone numbers 04451/126186 and 04451/126205. Only by joining forces can the city and the population overcome this annoying problem. A good first step in the right direction!
