Drama in the district: Seriously injured cyclist and fires cause excitement!
This Sunday, June 22, 2025, there are some moving events to report in northern Germany. The fire brigade was called upon and the police also had their hands full.
In Georgsmarienhütte, a fire broke out in a warehouse in the morning, causing material damage of around 100,000 euros. Fortunately, there were no injuries, although an adjacent residence had to be evacuated while police investigated. Harmer Street in Bakum was also the scene of another fire brigade operation, where a fire in a sub-distribution box was quickly located and extinguished using the thermal imaging camera, reports OM-Online.
Accidents and injuries
The roads in northern Germany were also anything but safe today. In Neuenkirchen, an 84-year-old cyclist was critically injured in a collision with a 19-year-old driver and had to be flown to hospital in a rescue helicopter. Another accident occurred on the B213, where a car-caravan combination and a car collided. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries, but the damage caused amounts to around 8,000 euros.
The situation in which a 40-year-old man from Visbek caused an accident with a blood alcohol level of 2.34 is particularly explosive. He had to hand over his driver's license and was asked to take a blood sample. This brings further attention to a recurring problem: alcohol-related traffic accidents, which, according to statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, have occurred over 600,000 times in Germany in the last few decades, with more than 26,000 such accidents being registered in 2022 alone. [Statista](https://de.statista.com/statistics/data/study/459049/umfrage/anzahl-der- Alcohol-related-traffic-accidents-deutschland/) clearly shows how important it is to use alcohol responsibly, especially when you are behind the wheel.
Crime and police actions
The police are also looking for a wrong-way driver in the Vechta district and have initiated proceedings against four car posers in Cloppenburg. The investigators are asking the public for help and information about the incidents, while in Emstek an unwanted theft of electronic waste was reported after failed attempts on a container. Here too, witnesses are asked to contact the police.
A look at the news from our region shows that both the fire brigade and the police are required and the tasks will probably not be any less in the coming days. As usual, further updates and information on current developments can be found at BR-Deutschland.
