Oldenburger TB in the relegation battle: Drama after derby defeat against Vechta!
A bitter Sunday for the Oldenburger TB (OTB): In the local derby against Rasta Vechta III, the team had to narrowly admit defeat with 91:93. This defeat marks the fourth in a row for the OTB, which is getting deeper and deeper into the regional league's relegation battle. The team, which has 12 points, is currently in 12th place in the table and is only separated by one point from 11th place, which the Vechta team now occupies - both teams have a dangerous points average of 12 points.
The way the game went was particularly bitter. The OTB was still ahead 53:47 at halftime, mainly thanks to the great Piet Niehus, who scored an impressive 30 points at the end of the game. With a lead of 78:66, the team seemed to be on the road to victory, but Rasta Vechta could not be stopped and equalized to 78:78 within just three minutes (NWZonline reports that...).
Criticism of the defense
OTB head coach Vangelis Kyritsis was combative but also critical after the game. He noted that better defense is needed to stop the current negative trend. He is particularly concerned about the rebound work, which he sees as crucial to the narrow defeat. Tim Insinger, a former Bundesliga player, had the opportunity to equalize with a free throw, but missed it in the last second - a missed opportunity that could cost the team dearly.
In addition to the disappointing game against Vechta, the OTB also suffered a clear defeat against Eisbären Bremerhaven II last week, where the team lost 67:97. This is particularly painful as it was one of the three defeats in a row for the first time this season. In this tense situation, the gap to the relegation zone has shrunk to just two points, which underlines the urgency of the coming games even more.
Personnel situation
The OTB's personnel situation remains tense. Tyrell Nwaki, the starting point guard, missed the game against Bremerhaven due to illness, while Johannes Heiken returned after a long injury. However, the team suffered another setback when Melvin Papenfuß was injured and could hardly play in the second half. Despite the strong performance of Piet Niehus, who scored 27 points against Bremerhaven, this could not prevent the clear defeat.
Kyritsis now calls on his team to find each other and reflect on their own strengths. The next game against the Twisters Rendsburg is coming up and could be crucial to whether the OTB can reverse the relegation battle. Next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. it's time to catch up again.
The current situation at OTB shows that the team urgently needs to work on its performance in order to survive in the regional league. It remains to be seen whether the OTB will be able to emerge from the current crisis. Some points are clear: improving defense, better rebounding and taking advantage of opportunities must be at the top of the to-do list.
