Storm crushes the Thomasmarkt: flea market canceled!
On the shopping Sunday, Vechta's city center experienced a colorful mix of activities and people, but the weather really made things difficult for the traditional Thomasmarkt. An infamous storm caused high wind speeds and downpours to dampen the mood and numerous program items from Friday to Sunday had to be interrupted or even canceled vechta.de reported.
Despite the adverse circumstances, there was a lot going on in the city center on Saturday afternoon. If the weather had been better there would have been a large number of visitors, but compared to previous years the number of visitors was significantly below expectations. The city marketing association Moin Vechta nevertheless received positive feedback from retailers, which somewhat alleviated concerns about sales.
Lantern parade despite the rain
Thursday evening was a highlight with the lantern parade. Hundreds of families marched with the Kolping Orchestra from the town hall to the shopping mile to the Neuer Markt. Members of the market committee and market supplies distributed delicious gingerbread hearts, while many children proudly carried their homemade lanterns. Unfortunately, the traditional musical fireworks display had to be canceled for safety reasons, which was disappointing for some.
However, the flea market, which is an integral part of the Thomasmarkt, suffered enormously from the bad weather conditions. On Saturday, only a few hobby dealers offered their goods, while the rest of the more than 250 free sales tables remained unused. On Sunday morning it was finally over: the flea market, which was supposed to start at 10 a.m., was canceled because it was impossible to set up in these windy and rainy conditions om-online.de reported.
Hobby art exhibition attracts visitors
One of the few highlights of the weekend was the hobby art exhibition in the town hall, which was well attended despite the unpleasant weather. Local artists presented their works here, which offered a welcome change. The city of Vechta stated that it was continuing to make efforts to carry out other program items of the traditional fair, such as the offers from the Vechta clubs, which opened promptly at 1 p.m.
Overall, the Thomasmarkt showed that even bad weather cannot dampen enthusiasm and community spirit. Even though many visitors and retailers were hoping for better weather, the anticipation for the upcoming events in Vechta remains unbroken. Let's see what the next Thomasmarkt will bring!
