Bird flu epidemic: Over a million chickens and turkeys killed in Lower Saxony!

Bird flu is currently making worrying headlines in Lower Saxony. Since the beginning of the year, overa million chickens and turkeyskilled due to the dreaded virus. These alarming figures are alarming and affect farms in the region where bird flu is particularly rampant. The FAZ reports that as of November 12, 2023, a total of 1,016,282 animals have been recorded following 63 outbreaks, with most outbreaks occurring since mid-October.

The rural districts are particularly affectedCloppenburg,VechtaandRotenburg. In these regions, protective measures were taken every quarter to contain the virus, including keeping poultry in stables. There are also reports that hunters are allowed to shoot sick wild birds such as cranes to prevent further spread. So far, direct contact with people does not appear to have led to transmission of the virus, but the population remains concerned.

The importance of poultry farming

Lower Saxony plays a central role in the German agricultural landscape and operates more than4,400 poultry farmswith over20 million laying hens. In 2024 there were around927,000 tons of poultryslaughtered, which corresponds to 59 percent of the nationwide total. Before the current outbreak, the number of animals killed by bird flu in 2022 was around179,000 animalsand also worrying in previous years with 1.17 million and 1.25 million animals.

The affected animal owners receive legally regulated compensation of up to50 euros per animal killed, coming soonup to 110 eurosshould be raised. Half of this compensation is borne by the state of Lower Saxony and half by the Lower Saxony Animal Disease Fund so that farmers can better cope with the consequences.

A look beyond the industry

The global economy is therefore resilient, even if local crises, such as the current bird flu in Lower Saxony, are testing the trust of consumers and farmers. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether the protective measures will be sufficient to prevent the virus from spreading further.

Healthy diet and lifestyle

In the midst of such worries, it is important to also take care of yourself. When it comes to losing weight without exercise, nutrition and mindfulness remain central aspects. An article by Prevention lists interesting tips to support a healthy lifestyle. For example, using smaller plates can lead to natural portion control. Choosing foods more consciously - especially more fiber and protein-rich foods - can also help to increase personal well-being without having to leave the house.

It remains exciting to see how the current challenges in agriculture and beyond are overcome. Lower Saxony is facing difficult times, while other sectors are simultaneously recording positive developments.
