82-year-old pensioner crosses the North Sea-inflatable boat adventure!
Büsum, Deutschland - A real adventurer recently made the waves of the North Sea unsafe: Horst Wittenberg, an 82-year-old pensioner from Nordenham, went on an impressive journey from Büsum to Helgoland with his slim rubber boat. This is not his first tour - two years ago, he already ventured onto the long route to Swinemünde with a different inflatable boat. But the current journey is a very special one for him, because Helgoland did it.
with a 3.30 meter long inflatable boat and an outboard engine that produces 9.9 hp, Wittenberg started in Büsum at 3 a.m. In ideal weather conditions that came up with one or two wind strengths and pleasant weather, he sailed around 70 kilometers to the island. After six hours at sea, which he reached at 9:30 a.m., he treated himself an hour before he decided to start the return trip on the same day.
a well -planned tour
Wittenberg emphasizes that security and suitable weather are crucial for such activities. Therefore, he invested around 1,500 euros in extensive safety equipment, which includes a GPS emergency station, a FM radio radio and a card plotter.
The pensioner, who worked as a ship engineer for almost 50 years, cannot be prevented from a small fall with his e-scooter, in which he was injured, from his adventure. His passion for the sea and his good experiences with boat tours are driving him up. Despite an unexpected breakdown with his card plotter on the return trip, he partially mastered the navigation to Kompass and successfully landed back in Büsum at 6 p.m. There he was warmly received by a friend.
A look at Helgoland
The enthusiasm for the island is understandable. Helgoland himself has a lot to offer - not just impressive cliffs and a diverse animal world that is very popular with both locals and tourists. If you don't want to travel with your own boat, you can drive the Sellebrunn Bortboot every day, which is considered a real symbol of the maritime tradition. That boat brings passengers with fresh stories and anecdotes to the island and gives the trip through the salty sea breeze a special note, as helgoland.de describes.
Wittenberg is already planning new adventures for the future. In two years he would like to tackle another tour - this time to Amsterdam. So it remains exciting what the sprightly adventurer is planning next and what stories he will tell!
