Frigate Hamburg” heads for NATO mission – departure from Wilhelmshaven!
On July 12, 2025 at 3 p.m. the time has come: the frigate “Hamburg” leaves its home port of Wilhelmshaven and gets ready for an important NATO mission. Under the command of Frigate Captain Alexander Timpf, the ship will become part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1). This group is tasked with securing the NATO alliance's maritime space and is supported by various frigates, destroyers and a supply ship from several NATO countries. After all, SNMG 1 has been in service since 1967 and was formerly known as the Standing Naval Force Atlantic.
The upcoming operation covers the waters of the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Atlantic and will last several months. Frigate captain Timpf, who took command of the “Hamburg” in February 2025, is proud of his crew and their commitment. “It is a challenging time for the crew and their families,” notes Timpf as he prepares for the tasks ahead.
Technical details of the frigate
The frigate “Hamburg” belongs to the Sachsen class, a series of three modern frigates in the Navy that specialize in air defense, escort and maritime control. It has a powerful radar capable of detecting over 1,000 targets simultaneously, as well as anti-aircraft missiles with a range of more than 160 km. The command and weapon deployment system (FüWES) processes the data from radars and sensors. The Sachsen class can also carry several warships and is equipped with on-board helicopters for submarine hunting.
In the first half of 2025, the “Hamburg” has already taken part in intensive training trips in order to optimally prepare for the mission. According to the Marine Press and Information Center, the frigate and its crew are expected to return to Wilhelmshaven towards the end of 2025.
Current NATO activities
NATO activities have been full of exciting events in recent weeks. Several frigates from SNMG 1 were recently at the Kiel naval base and carried out exercises there together with the soldiers of the Marine Special Forces Command (KSM). Among other things, an attack scenario was simulated in which frigates were attacked - of course only with blank cartridges. In addition to the “Hamburg”, other ships were also involved, including the Danish frigate HDMS Niels Juel and the Portuguese frigate Bartolomeu Dias.
The exciting impressions from these exercises were captured by numerous media representatives and generated a lot of interest around NATO's maritime defense capacity. A press event for the departure of the “Hamburg” has already been planned, and media representatives are invited to document the departure at the Heppenser Groden naval base in Wilhelmshaven. Registrations are required by July 11, 2025.
With the upcoming mission, the frigate “Hamburg” will further expand its contribution to the common security of NATO countries and play a key role in the control of European waters. It remains exciting to see how the mission will develop and what challenges the crew will have to overcome!
