Frigate Hamburg heads NATO mission-departure from Wilhelmshaven!

on July 12, 2025 at 3 p.m. the time has come: The frigate "Hamburg" leaves its home port of Wilhelmshaven and is ready for an important NATO mission. Under the command of frigate captain Alexander Timpf, the ship becomes part of the Standing Nato Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1). This group has the task of securing the maritime space of the NATO alliance, and it is supported by various frigates, destroyers and a supply ship from several NATO countries. Finally, the SNMG 1 has been in action since 1967 and earlier under the name "Standing Naval Force Atlantic".

The upcoming use includes the waters of the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic and will take several months. Frigate captain Timpf, who took command of the "Hamburg" in February 2025, is proud of his crew and its operational readiness. "It is a challenging time for the crew and its families," notes Timpf, while preparing for the upcoming tasks.

technical details of the frigate

The frigate "Hamburg" belongs to the Saxony class, a series of three modern frigates in the navy, which specializes in air defense, escort protection and pollution control. It has a powerful radar that can record over 1,000 destinations at the same time, as well as anti -aircraft missiles with a range of more than 160 km. The management and weapon use system (Füwes) processes the data of radars and sensors. In addition, the Saxony class can run several warships and is equipped with a submarine hunt with on-board helicopter.

In the first half of 2025, the "Hamburg" already took part in intensive training trips in order to optimally prepare for the mission. According to the Marine press and information center, the return of the frigate and its crew in Wilhelmshaven are expected towards the end of 2025.

Current NATO activities

NATO activities have been rich in exciting events in the past few weeks. Several frigates of the SNMG 1 last stayed in the Kiel naval base and carried out exercises together with the soldiers of the command of the Marine (KSM) command. Among other things, an attack scenario was simulated, in which frigates were taken under fire - of course only with space cartridges. In addition to the "Hamburg", other ships were also involved, including the Danish frigate HDMS Niels Juel and the Portuguese frigate Bartolomeu slides.

The exciting impressions of these exercises were recorded by numerous media representatives and caused a lot of interest in NATO's maritime defense capacity. A press appointment for the departure of the "Hamburg" has already been planned, and media representatives are invited to document the departure at the Heppeners Groden naval base in Wilhelmshaven. Registrations are required by July 11, 2025.

With the upcoming mission, the "Hamburg" frigate will further expand its contribution to the joint security of the NATO countries and play a key role in the control of European waters. It remains exciting how the mission will develop and what challenges the crew must cope!
