Marine accident in Wilhelmshaven: Lock head severely damaged after collision!
On Sunday evening, an incident in Wilhelmshaven's Nordhafen caused a stir. The German Navy's task force supplier “Berlin” rammed the head of the lock, causing significant damage. The wheelhouse of the measuring point was particularly affected, as it was completely destroyed in the collision. Luckily there were no injuries, but the consequences are serious.
The lock was immediately closed to check for possible debris. Jade Diver divers were tasked with searching for fallen objects and actually found some rocks. Dirk Eickmeyer from the Weser-Jade-Nordsee Waterways and Shipping Office informed that the western chamber was expected to be reopened by the afternoon. The damage to the ship itself was limited: only a dent was found on the bow, without any structural damage or technical problems, so that the “Berlin” can start its training program on Tuesday as planned. The 174 meter long ship had left its berth at 7:10 p.m. and was due to enter the west chamber shortly before 8 p.m. when the incident occurred. After the collision, the “Berlin” moored back to its previous berth and is waiting for further decisions. A construction expert has been appointed to develop proposals for security measures, while a container is to be set up as a replacement control center at the head of the lock, as NWZ Online reported.
Review of the operation
Like the ship “Frankfurt am Main”, the “Berlin” is one of the three operational group supply companies of the German Navy. These ships provide logistical support by supplying operational units at sea with fuel, fresh water, provisions and ammunition. The “Frankfurt am Main” only returned to Wilhelmshaven in December 2023 after a five-month deployment in the Mediterranean. During this time she supported the Greek and Turkish coast guards, particularly in connection with the crisis situation in the Gaza war. Commander Hanno Weisensee and his crew successfully overcame the challenges of the mission, which aimed to strengthen maritime surveillance against smuggling. This made it easier for our Navy to deal not only with duties but also with challenges, which resulted in a clear testimony to the professionalism of the force Buten un Binnen.
The incident in Wilhelmshaven once again highlights the dangers and challenges facing the Navy, both in operations and at home. The current investigations and the necessary inspection of the lock area will show what measures need to be taken to avoid such incidents in the future. Stay tuned, we will keep you informed about developments!
