Holidays for Wolfsburg: Roy Präzer invites Martina Müller for the polo trip!

Wolfsburg, Deutschland - On June 15, 2025, the Volkswagen Polo celebrates an impressive anniversary: proud 50 years as Wolfsburg icon. On this special occasion, VfL legend Roy Präger invited the former professional footballer Martina Müller to a nostalgic journey in the Polo goal. Müller, who has put a remarkable career in women's football, is happy to remember and talks about her experiences at VfL Wolfsburg, her greatest successes and the challenges she has mastered on her way.

For the likeable footballer, her trip began at VfL Wolfsburg in January 2005 when she changed from Bad Neuenahr. Their start was anything but simple: Despite her personal success, such as winning the goal scorer crown in the 2nd Bundesliga North 2005/2006 with 36 goals, VfL could not avert the descent to the 2nd Bundesliga. Müller was a key figure in the team at the time and initially even had to sleep on the sofa of the cult supervisor Jörg "Kulle" Schmidt.

The triple win and unforgettable moments

A special highlight of her career was the sensational triple win in the 2012/2013 season when VfL Wolfsburg won the German championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League. Müller looks back on this year as the greatest success of her career-even more important than two World Cup titles. In the Champions League final against Tyresö FF, she took responsibility in the 80th minute and scored the decisive goal for the 4: 3 victory. This performance in Lisbon remains unforgettable, not least because it took place under the critical eyes of UEFA President Michel Platini and DFB boss Wolfgang Niersbach.

"That was an unforgettable moment. It felt like all the hard work and the challenges we had gotten through in this one goal," said Müller. Her favorite player, Nadine Kessler, who plays an important role as a UEFA director of women's football today, also had her share in the golden era of the club.

The change in women's football

Women's football has gone through an impressive change in Germany. From his beginnings around 1900, the oppression by the DFB, which largely banned football for women until 1970, to official leagues and competitions, sport is now socially recognized and boomed. The league system has now expanded to over 400 leagues and around 4,500 teams. VfL Wolfsburg is not only represented at the head of the Bundesliga, but is also considered a record winner in the DFB Cup of women.

Despite these successes, women's football in Germany continues to be faced with challenges, especially with regard to media representation and salary questions compared to men's football. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga has experienced a remarkable spectator boom in recent years, especially during the European Championships 2022, and will be increased to 14 teams from 2025.

After her active football career, Müller found a new passion. She has been involved in Volkswagen in the area of mobility and environmental services since 2015. "The connection between sport and work is a great enrichment for me. I am glad that I can continue to work in a team," says the passionate ex-player.

Martina Müller's life is an example of how change and success can come together in women's football. VfL Wolfsburg remains a formative force in this story, and every year the contribution of women to football is more recognized. Together with her old companion Roy Präger, she shows that it is never too late to drive the streets of Wolfsburg in the iconic Polo goal to celebrate the memories of a grandiose time.
