Holiday for Wolfsburg: Roy Präger invites Martina Müller to the polo ride!
On June 15, 2025, the Volkswagen Polo will celebrate an impressive anniversary: a proud 50 years as a Wolfsburg icon. For this special occasion, VfL legend Roy Präger invited former professional footballer Martina Müller for a nostalgic ride in the Polo GOAL. Müller, who has had a remarkable career in women's football, looks back fondly and talks about her experiences at VfL Wolfsburg, her greatest successes and the challenges she overcame along the way.
For the likeable footballer, her journey at VfL Wolfsburg began in January 2005 when she moved from Bad Neuenahr. Their start was anything but easy: Despite their personal successes, such as winning the top scorer's crown in the 2nd Bundesliga North in 2005/2006 with 36 goals, VfL could not avert relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga. Müller was a key figure in the team at the time and initially even had to sleep on the sofa of cult supervisor Jörg “Kulle” Schmidt.
The triple win and unforgettable moments
A particular highlight of her career was the sensational treble win in the 2012/2013 season, when VfL Wolfsburg won the German championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League. Müller looks back on this year as the greatest success of her career - even more important than two world titles. In the Champions League final against Tyresö FF, she took responsibility in the 80th minute and scored the decisive goal in a 4-3 win. This performance in Lisbon will never be forgotten, not least because it took place under the critical eyes of UEFA President Michel Platini and DFB boss Wolfgang Niersbach.
"It was an unforgettable moment. It felt like all the hard work and challenges we had been through came together in this one goal," said Müller. Her favorite teammate, Nadine Keßler, who now plays an important role as UEFA's director of women's football, also played a part in the club's golden era.
The change in women's football
Women's football has undergone impressive change in Germany. From its beginnings around 1900, through the oppression of the DFB, which largely banned football for women until 1970, to official leagues and competitions, the sport is now socially recognized and booming. The league system has now expanded to over 400 leagues and around 4,500 teams. VfL Wolfsburg is not only at the top of the Bundesliga, but is also considered the record winner in the Women's DFB Cup.
Despite these successes, women's football in Germany continues to face challenges, particularly in terms of media representation and salary issues compared to men's football. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga has experienced a notable boom in attendance in recent years, particularly during Euro 2022, and will be expanded to 14 teams from 2025.
After her active football career, Müller found a new passion. She has been working at Volkswagen in the area of mobility and environmental services since 2015. "The combination of sport and work is a great enrichment for me. I'm glad that I can continue to work in the team," says the passionate former player.
Martina Müller's life is an example of how change and success can come together in women's football. VfL Wolfsburg remains a defining force in this history, and with each passing year, women's contribution to football is more recognized. Together with her old companion Roy Präger, she shows that it is never too late to drive the streets of Wolfsburg in the iconic Polo GOAL to celebrate the memories of a great time.
