Deportation from Hamburg: Two dangerous Afghans fly back!

On July 18, 2025, two Afghans who were previously in a Hamburg prison for serious crimes were deported from Hamburg. The men, aged 29 and 30, were convicted of grievous bodily harm and drug trafficking and were flown to Afghanistan immediately while in custody. The deportation flight started in Leipzig in the morning with the destination Kabul and took a total of 81 people, including other convicted criminals, back to their home country. This measure is the second since the Taliban came to power three years ago. Loud n-tv Hamburg campaigned to carry out deportations to Afghanistan again.

The two men came to Germany in 2015 and 2019 and had no prospect of a right to stay because there were deportation orders against them. Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) emphasized the need for deportations in such cases and pointed out that the deportees had served at least two thirds of their prison sentence. The 29-year-old was known for repeated dangerous bodily harm, while the 30-year-old was convicted of drug offenses several times.

Background to the deportations

It should be noted that as of August 30, 2024, 28 men have already been deported to Afghanistan, which is considered the first such action after the transfer of power. This illustrates the development in German domestic policy with regard to deportation practices. The question is being discussed in many places under what conditions a return to Afghanistan, which is controlled by the Taliban, is possible. There is no direct agreement with the Taliban; the repatriations were organized with the support of Qatari authorities.

Upon their arrival, the deportees received a “cash money” of 1,000 euros, which is intended to support them in their new beginning in Afghanistan. Once they arrived at their destination, some of the deportees were immediately released by local authorities. These precautions are necessary to ensure the safety of those affected, although detailed information about the security measures has not yet been published.

Summary of deportation practice

A look at the deportation policy shows that people from Hamburg as well as other federal states are affected by serious crimes such as rape, drug trafficking or bodily harm. The list of common offenses shows that deportees came from different regions of Germany; many of them were not only imprisoned for the most serious offenses, but were also considered dangerous. The measures taken by the authorities are aimed at regulating such cases in the future and protecting society.

The topic is extremely topical and stimulates discussion about security, law and humanitarian responsibility. The challenges of returning and integrating criminals into their homeland and the question of local security remain a constant topic in the political debate.
