Drunk driver lands her car in Kiel's city lake - lucky!

In the early morning of July 14, 2025, a strange incident occurred in Kiel. At around 2 a.m., a 20-year-old woman landed her car in “Little Kiel”. The journey began at the parade ground, but no decision was made to turn and the vehicle began an unwanted dive. While the car sank, only the rear was visible. Fortunately, the driver and her 23-year-old passenger were able to save themselves and were taken to hospital, but appear to be uninjured. The police have started an investigation because the woman was drunk and could not produce a driver's license, which makes the situation even more problematic.

What attracts people to cycling? Another event took place on the same day: the 29th Hanseatic Tour Sonnenschein. Over the next four days, up to 200 participants will cycle from Rostock via Eutin to Kiel and back, in the spirit of doing good for children with cancer and chronically ill children. Prime Minister Daniel Günther has taken over the patronage of this important campaign and it is expected that the bike tour will once again raise a significant amount for the benefit of the children affected.

Needs of school support

A survey has shown that over 7,500 children with physical and mental disabilities as well as behavioral problems in Schleswig-Holstein urgently need school support. This number has almost doubled in the last four years. The district council is therefore calling for responsibility to be pooled at the Ministry of Education in order to better organize the individual support that these children need. School support aims to improve the learning conditions of all students and to ensure the right to help in accordance with legal regulations. However, the decision as to which children are entitled to support lies with the local social and youth welfare providers.

The situation of foster parents in Schleswig-Holstein also remains tense. They express sharp criticism of the Family Ministry regarding communication problems between youth welfare offices, especially when it comes to controversial cases. An example that is causing a stir is the return of a foster child to his birth mother, despite known difficulties. The Family Ministry has recognized that there is a need for improvement here.

Security offensive and new solar energy

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is scheduled to visit Neustadt in Holstein today. During his inaugural visit to the Federal Police Directorate, he spoke to the federal police officers about the challenges of their job. As part of these discussions, Dobrindt also announced a security offensive that will result in the creation of 1,000 new positions in the federal police.

Speaking of innovation: A new solar park is inaugurated on the former military airfield in Eggebek. With a peak output of over 160 megawatts, this location will be Schleswig-Holstein's largest producer of photovoltaics and a step towards a more sustainable future.
