Extensive construction work begins in Flensburg's northern city: traffic restrictions until October 2025, accessibility in focus.

Flensburg: Construction work will bring traffic chaos until October 2025!
In Flensburg, the Technical Operations Center (TBZ) began extensive construction work on the “Am Katharinenhof” street today. These measures are expected to have a significant impact on traffic until October 2025. The first section concerns the area between the intersection “Bauer Landstrasse/Am Katharinenhof” and the Ramsharde school. As NDR reports, in the course of this work not only the road surfaces will be renewed, but also district heating pipes and cables will be laid.
Important for road users: The intersection area from “Bauer Landstrasse” to the south is not passable during construction work. If you come from the north, you can only turn right. Diversions are already signposted to help residents and commuters across the construction site.
Barrier-free expansion is making progress
The construction work is part of a larger plan that includes several construction phases until 2028. The aim is to widen the sidewalks and make bus stops barrier-free. These efforts are in line with the 2016 amendment to the Disability Equality Act, which increases efforts for barrier-free construction. According to the Guideline for Barrier-free Building, buildings should be accessible to all people, including people with motor, visual, auditory and cognitive limitations.
The guide offers numerous assistance and explains what holistic planning for barrier-free construction can look like. The focus is on ensuring that new buildings and conversions of existing buildings are easy to find, easily accessible and easy to use.
Further construction projects are being planned
Parallel to the work in Flensburg, barrier-free expansion is also progressing in other regions. An example of this is the Westfalen-Blatt, which reports on renovation work on Unterstrasse. These are expected to run until October 2023, with closures in the eastern area of Unterstrasse. Although residents are allowed to drive to the construction site, the shops can still be reached via diversions. Replacement stops have been set up as the original bus stops cannot be accessed during construction work.
Overall, these measures show the growing awareness of accessibility in urban development. The traffic restrictions may create inconveniences, but they are a step in the right direction for inclusive urban planning. Flensburg and other cities are taking responsibility to improve daily life for all citizens.
