HSG Wetzlar: Coach Ilic warns of the awesome program at the start of the league!
The handball Bundesliga is just around the corner and HSG Wetzlar is starting a new season full of challenges and opportunities. Coach Momir Ilic, who has just taken office, knows that the start will not be a walk in the park. In a “hammer program”, the team expects tough things right from the start: first it’s against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and then THW Kiel awaits. It means giving everything!
A lot could change under the new coach Ilic, who has been in charge in Wetzlar since July 2025. The 43-year-old Serbian brings with him a wealth of experience after an illustrious playing career in which he collected 24 titles. This also includes 3 German championships and two Champions League titles. Ilic not only wants to stabilize HSG Wetzlar, but also want to move it up in the table after last season ended in 14th place. So the goal is clear: a better ranking!
New impulses and a breath of fresh air
Ilic plans to implement the HSG Wetzlar game system in time for the start of the season in the training camp, which begins on Monday. The focus is on faster handball and solid physical preparation. He is supported by a completely revamped team with eight new additions, whose integration represents an important task for Ilic. He himself is full of anticipation about the team dynamic that will develop during training camp.
Also worth paying attention to is Cyril Akakpo, who will be traveling with us despite a hand injury and is training individually. Jona Schoch and Dominik Mappes, on the other hand, can announce their return after breaks from injury and will be back on board for the training camp.
The right man for the job
HSG Wetzlar sees Momir Ilic as the ideal coach to bring a breath of fresh air into the team. After the departure of Frank Carstens, who will leave the team in the summer of 2025, the search for his successor was crucial. Ilic is not only recognized in the handball community - he was inducted into the European Handball Federation (EHF) Hall of Fame in 2023 - but also has international experience and speaks German well. His family will move with him from Balaton to Central Hesse, a step that Ilic sees as a responsibility and a privilege.
His approach to improving players and presenting modern handball could be exactly the right thing to get Wetzlar back on track. While HSG Wetzlar is building on Ilic, the handball world is also increasingly recognizing the importance of sports psychology. Experts like Henning Thrien and André Haber emphasize that mental strength is also of central importance in handball and are convinced that it can significantly support future successes.
With great commitment and fresh ideas, Ilic wants to lead HSG Wetzlar into a new era. One can only hope that the starting signal on the first match day in Flensburg will be a success!
