Kiel Duck Race 2025: Collecting for a good cause starts now!

They are already ready at the boat harbor in Kiel: two large, decorated rubber ducks are looking forward to their big appearance at the 19th Kiel Duck Race. The noble competition takes place on Sunday, August 24th and has long since established itself as a permanent institution in Kiel's event calendar. Sales of the racing licenses started today, June 20th, in various shops in Kiel. The anticipation is great, after all only 3,000 of the colorful ducks will be sent into the race.

One of the driving forces behind this spectacle is the organizer Sabine Loose, who is not only active in the Lions Club Kieler Sprotten, but has also been a driving force for the success of the duck race in recent years. The Lions Club itself has collected over 860,000 euros for numerous charitable projects in 14 years. This year's event has the motto: “Making the world a little better.”

Diverse support for a good cause

Sponsors such as hairdressers and dentists ensure that the proceeds go to a good cause this year. The funds go to the Number Against Kummer (Child Protection Association Kiel) and to the Hospice Association Dänischer Wohld. The training of new helpers for telephone advice is also supported. Last year's revenue was an impressive €30,000 and similar amounts are expected for 2025.

The event attracts thousands of spectators to the keel line, where young and old watch the colorful ducks being let into the water. In addition to the special race, around 30 decorated ducks will be presented for sponsors to raise awareness of the event and stimulate public interest. They keep an eye on sustainability: colorful old ducks are given away to children to reduce waste.

A colorful spectacle for everyone

In total there are around 70 prizes to be won, which increases the excitement even more. The Kiel Duck Race has not only become fun for the whole family, but also actively promotes local social projects. In 2019, for example, 50,080 euros were collected for the Family Sponsors project. The organization behind the race, the Kiel Lions and Leos, meets monthly to plan the individual details and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

The Lions Club International, which was founded in the USA in 1917, is committed to social projects and services for people in need around the world. With the duck race, the Kiel Lions show that there is a big contribution to be made here in the region to help others. In addition to the proceeds, such events bring the community together and promote cohesion.

All in all, we can look forward to an exciting event that is not only entertaining, but also entirely for a good cause. The 19th Kiel Duck Race promises to be a truly unforgettable experience for everyone!
