Art and marine protection: Kiel celebrates the opening of Origin.Kiel”!

On Friday, November 7th, 2025, the new exhibition “Origin.Kiel – Origin-Present-Future” will open, curated by the talented artist and sculptor Marcus Meyer. This exhibition focuses on marine protection and the preservation of endangered animal species and is a joint project that was created in cooperation with the state capital of Kiel, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel and Kiel-Marketing. Snacks and drinks are also provided by the Hotel ATLANTIC, so that your physical well-being is taken care of. After the official speeches, visitors have the opportunity to take part in a half-hour tour of selected exhibition objects in Kiel city center.
Art as an appeal to the environment
Marcus Meyer is no stranger to the region. He has already attracted a lot of attention with his previous exhibition “Beautiful World” at CITTI-PARK Kiel. From May 19 to June 14, 2025, he showed sculptures and objects that address the complex relationships between humans, nature and technology. Meyer is known for his critical but also optimistic approaches to environmentally conscious issues. His works, including over-bred plywood pig figurines and technical objects such as the “Sea Mine,” raise questions such as: “Why aren’t we doing what we should be doing to stop negative developments?” and “Why do we do what we shouldn’t do?” This mixture of critical thinking and a positive vision of the future is an essential part of his approach to art. CITTI PARK Kiel emphasizes that his aim is to emphasize the potential of human creativity.
His art often appears as an appeal to our awareness of the environment and commitment to what we should value. In his work, Meyer uses various types of wood such as OSB panels, MDF, zebrano, wenge and elm. The visual contrasts between lifelike animal figures and technical wooden objects invite the viewer to think.
A look into art history
The engagement with art is not new. As the word itself shows, the term “art” comes from Middle Low German and carries deeper meanings, starting with “knowledge” and “skill” that go back to the origins of human creativity. Wiktionary reports that the origin of the word is rooted in Proto-Germanic, which underlines the importance and importance of art in different cultures.
The upcoming exhibition “Origin.Kiel” will not only be a feast for the senses, but also a powerful stimulus for reflection about the influence we can have on our environment and the future. Visitors are warmly invited to be inspired - from November 7th in Kiel.
