Paderborn's start to the second half of the season ends dramatically: 0-2 defeat in Kiel!

A touch of disappointment hovered over the Holstein Stadium when SC Paderborn 07 started the second half of the 2nd Bundesliga yesterday. Coach Ralf Kettemann's team had to admit defeat to Holstein Kiel 0-2, which put their hopes of moving up to second place in the table into the distance for the time being. In front of 13,757 spectators, Paderborn were superior for long periods of the game, but were unable to score the decisive goals. Kiel, on the other hand, proved to be efficient and cleverly exploited their chances to secure victory.

In the first half, Paderborn had more possession of the ball, but did not manage to create clear scoring chances. Kiel took the lead in the 18th minute through Steven Skrzybski, disappointing the Paderborn fans who had traveled there. This goal threw Paderborn off guard and the team found it difficult to get back into the game. After the substitution, Kettemann brought Filip Bilbija and Kennedy Okpala into the game in the 62nd minute in the hope of bringing a breath of fresh air.

Serious injury overshadows the game

Unfortunately, the game was overshadowed by a dramatic moment: Paderborn defender Calvin Brackelmann was seriously injured in a collision and had to be taken straight off the field on a stretcher. Such moments are not easy to process and put additional strain on the players and staff.

In the second half, Kiel increased their lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute through Lasse Rosenboom. Despite all their efforts and best intentions, Paderborn were unable to score the next goal as a possible goal in the 75th minute was withdrawn after a VAR check. Coach Kettemann will now be required to prepare the team psychologically for the upcoming game against Preußen Münster on January 25th.

A look at the table

This start to the second half of the season was anything but ideal for SC Paderborn. This means the team remains in the table behind SV Elversberg and Darmstadt, who also failed to win. The starting situation is not hopeless, but the Paderborn team must soon get back on the road to success in order to achieve their goals.

The new additions to the Kielean starting line-up, Jonas Meffert and Umur Tohumcu, were particularly successful in quickly adapting to the game and setting decisive accents. Paderborn themselves did not bring either of the two nominal newcomers into the matchday squad, which could turn out to be a strategic mistake. The second half of the season has just begun and there are still many games left to turn the season around.

It will now be important for the Paderborn team to learn the lessons from this defeat and put everything on one card in the next game. Whether this will be successful will be seen at the next meeting. SC Paderborn has the potential to improve – now the knot has to be broken.
