Dispute over flower picking park: Greens and AfD surprisingly in Kiel!

There is currently a heated dispute in Kiel over a proposal from the Greens to renovate Eschmachstrasse. The motion, which aims to amend a 2024 council decision, calls for the deforestation of the popular “flower picker’s park”. Surprisingly, this motion was approved with 7 votes to 6, and the result caused considerable chaos in the political landscape in Kiel. The votes were divided between 4 Greens, 1 from the SSW, 1 from Die Linke/Diepartei and 1 from the AfD, while the CDU and SPD voted unanimously against it.

What sparked the debate was the AfD's decisive role in the acceptance of the application. Carsten Rockstein, parliamentary group leader of the CDU, spoke of hypocrisy on the part of the Greens, criticizing the support of the AfD. Corresponding accusations also came from Enrico Tokar, co-chairman of the SPD, who said that the Greens had crossed a “red line”. The leader of the Green Party, Anke Oetken, never tires of emphasizing that the vote was a mistake for her. The AfD's approval was not expected and any future collaboration with them is categorically ruled out.

Citizens from Kiel are divided about the vote result. The Blumenpicker citizens' initiative cannot feel comfortable with the situation because it has not spoken to the AfD. Finn Pridat, spokesman for the Green district board, explained that the application was submitted in the interests of the residents. In Kiel, a comparable vote in which the AfD's votes were decisive is so far unique. The debate comes shortly before the mayoral elections on November 16th, in which Samet Yilmaz is running for the Greens.

The vision of the Greens

ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS have a clear vision: They are committed to a society in which all people can live in dignity and freedom. The principles of ecology, justice, self-determination, democracy and peace are in the foreground. The party believes in society's ability to overcome challenges together and focuses on people in their dignity and freedom. “Democracy is a process,” emphasizes the party, based on mutual respect and the common good.

At a time when climate change and social inequalities are pressing issues, the Greens are calling for investments in ecological modernization and social cohesion to promote economic success and a more livable future. You are invited to actively participate and help shape politics so that politics makes people's lives more livable and more protective.

Focus on environmental and nature conservation

A central concern of the Greens is protecting the environment. Clean water, good air and fertile soil are essential for survival. Intact ecosystems such as forests and natural green spaces are crucial for a healthy environment and contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide. The “Natural Climate Protection Action Program” (ANK) promotes the restoration and protection of these ecosystems.

At the same time, reference is made to the challenges of industrial agriculture, which endangers biodiversity and has negative effects on plants and animals. The goal of reducing agricultural toxins and an urgently needed agricultural transition is on the political agenda.

In a world in which the seas are also threatened by overfishing and plastic waste, the party strives to preserve the sea as an ecosystem and to establish large-scale protected areas. International agreements to protect the oceans and restore nature have also been reached to protect the Earth's biological diversity.

In this context, the political debate in Kiel will certainly cause excitement for a long time to come. The coming elections could decide not only the future of the Green Party in the city, but also the course the city wants to take in the coming years.
