100 years of the Schleswig Tennis Club: An anniversary for the future!
A special occasion was celebrated in Schleswig last week: the Schleswig Tennis Club (STC) celebrated its centenary. Founded on April 24, 1925 as the Schleswig Tennis Society, the club has developed over the years into an important institution in the sporting life of the region. Tennis was previously a department of VfL Schleswig, but the founding of its own club brought a breath of fresh air and more opportunities for tennis enthusiasts.
The first tennis facilities were inaugurated in 1925 on Schlei-Straße behind the theater. In view of the growing number of members, the move to Husumer Straße took place in 1967, where the club is still located today. Since then, the area has continued to develop and now the 220 members, including around 50 children and young people, have access to eight clay courts and a modern indoor arena. Recent renovations included new carpeting and efficient LED lighting, further enhancing the sporty ambience.
An anniversary year of events
Planning for the anniversary year began around a year and a half in advance. The highlight of the celebrations was the exclusive tennis event with Mischa Zverev on July 19th, where around 400 visitors had the opportunity to experience a special training session. Zverev, who contributed to the raffle with a racket belonging to his brother Alexander Zverev, led training sessions for the club's young talents and concluded the day with exciting exhibition matches. Johann Hansen, the first chairman, was thrilled by the positive feedback and great enthusiasm that the day generated.
In the summer of 2025, the STC registered a total of 14 teams, including the women's 60 in the Northeast Regional League. In addition, nine adult teams are active in winter. Members and non-members alike have the option of booking the hall online - an ideal option for tennis enthusiasts and those who would like to become one.
Awards and honors
The STC received a special honor in October 2025. The club's 100-year history was honored at the Museum for Cloth & Technology in Neumünster. Johann Hansen and Cornelia Claussen accepted awards from the Prime Minister and the sports plaque from the Federal President - an honor that underlines the great importance of the club within the German tennis landscape.
German tennis history itself has undergone an interesting development that began around 1880 and has seen many highlights since then. Today, tennis is one of the most popular sports in the country, which is certainly thanks to the numerous dedicated clubs such as the STC. Despite the anniversary, the future remains promising for the members in Schleswig. The club is starting its 101st year optimistically and is looking forward to the coming sporting events and challenges.
